Since my wife is arguably the brains in the family and definitely the boss (if you know what I mean, Wabo
![]() [Show spoiler] ) instead of catching up alone with all the soccer action from yesterday I’d recorded on TV, I was dominated into watching Enola Holmes last night with my better half, despite the rez (as circled) –![]() I kinda liked it. I hope some of the professional cinematographers out there don't see some of the scenes as being too dark with their home TVs. |

1080P HDR is probably the way most ATSC 3.0 main broadcast will be shown. We watched it a few days ago in HDR10 and found the video quality quite good. We also enjoyed the movie.

Under the specs for UHD for ATSC 3.0, 1080P HDR is considered an UHD format while 1080P is considered an HD format. |

Just call it 1080p HDR. But no-one should be calling it UHD with a straight face. |

Why not? We call 2K upscales (with HDR) 'UHD' with a straight face. The UHD name doesn't denote resolution, or anything much really, over regular HD other than it is 'Ultra'. And 1080p HDR is included in the UHD Blu specs too.

They needed a low end classification of UHD because they knew that no broadcaster was going to use his full bandwidth to broadcast a single 4K HDR channel other than once a year for the Super Bowl. There are three formats for UHD ATSC 3.0: 2160P @ 120 FPS + HDR 2160P @ 60 FPS + HDR 1080P @ 60 FPS + HDR There are two formats for HD ATSC 3.0 1080i @ 60 Fields/sec. 720P @ 60 FPS. |

The ATSC 3.0 broadcasters wanted to be able to say they are broadcasting in UHD. But they didn't want to use all their bandwidth for a single channel. I believe it was Joe Kane who was working on 1080P HDR and showed numerous clips to broadcasters, and how good it looked and how much of their allotted bandwidth they still had left. SOLD!

this week Madeleine is chairing a session on ATSC 3.0 implementation, I’ll try to find out if anything significantly new is presented

4K source at the broadcaster, but scaled down/transmitted at 1440p, then it would scale up nicely back to native 4K displays, whilst still being bandwidth efficient. |
