It will be.
Glad to hear the BDA is working on implementing HDR10+ as another optional HDR format. I'm assuming HDMI 2.1 is necessary? And any chance it can live on the same disc as Dolby Vision?

(Hope you don't mind me moving this to the HDR thread. It's getting off topic in Power Rangers.)

HDMI 2.1 is needed for HDR10+. I would imagine DV hardware product would have to be updated again once Dolby updated their encoding software to be able to strip the HDR10+ dynamic metadata and replace it with DV's.

The dual layer approach may get a bit more complicated with HDR10+ as the base, though it probably could be done.

Both are being looked into and tested so as of now, it's not clear. Personally, I can't see HDMI 2.1 being required. There's just too much hardware out there now that won't support it. Maybe 2.0c or 2.0d(ynamic)? I'm guessing at the last part so no one hold me to it.

The Technical Director of HDMI LA has already confirmed that TVs with HDMI 2.0a can be upgraded to support dynamic HDR via HDMI, without needing all of the other HDMI 2.1 features. Dynamic HDR over HDMI doesn't require the 48 Gbps cables either.

Do you have an estimate on when the format will be accepted by BDA?

Will it be difficult to convert dynamic metadata from DV to HDR10+ and vice-versa.

My LG tv supports DV but not HDR10+. Is it possible for a UHD player or portable media player to convert HDR10+ content to DV for future compatibility?

That's the thing: dynamic HDR10 won't require a ginourmous increase in throughput - metadata is just carried as tiny packets within/alongside the main signal - so just as certain aspects of 'HDMI 2.0' were carried over to the half-fat 300Mhz HDMI chips e.g. 4K60Hz compatibility I can see HDR10+ being adapted in a similar fashion. The actual HDR10+ signalling system itself will still need to be adopted via firmware in whatever TV, natch, but in terms of sheer bandwidth dynamic metadata ain't no thang. As far as the broader compatibility is concerned then static HDR10 always was and always will be the base layer.

PS

DAMN that was hard to type up when drunk.

If you have a TV that already maps static HDR10 adequately and has Dolby Vision then I wouldn't worry, it's only really Fox who will be pursuing dynamic HDR10. Lionsgate, Universal and Sony have already committed to DV on disc, Paramount and Disney are a good bet for DV also.

Just realized this means that X-Men: Dark Phoenix, Deadpool 2, Alien: Awakening, the next Predator movie, and Avatar 2 could very well get HDR10+ treatment.

I was emailed this article last night, in the paragraph titled -

Aesthetic Considerations
“And the original 1990 Twin Peaks looked exactly the way David Lynch wanted it to look. So is it right to change that vision?” https://www.ibc.org/content-manageme...ir=1&adredir=1

Do you or anyone else know of David L. expressing that sentiment somewhere publicly? I was unaware. Interestingly relevant given my post near the top of the last page.

“Producer Jon Landau, who recently announced that Avatar 2 has started production, had this to say in a statement: “Just as we push innovation with our productions, Christie is continually pushing innovation with their projection technology. Its advances in HDR development, epitomized by the co-development of the Dolby Vision projection solution with Dolby, means better in-theater experiences for audiences, which for exhibitors in turn means greater audience satisfaction and more repeat patrons.”

A Fox movie with a director and producer who want to push innovation. Almost looks like a lock for HDR10+ on disc.

Nothing really super unique that conscientious readers of this thread weren’t already at least somewhat familiar with, except maybe for the fact that fellow Blu-ray.com member David M. was there.

Given this ominous tweet by the President of the Ultra HD Forum from last year…..
https://twitter.com/thierryfautier/s...04478388805633 after which the popular social media opinion was to conclude that the Ultra HD Blu-ray spec is written in stone, despite the fact I informed readers otherwise - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post13073687

….and revisions/updates could in fact be made so long as there was motivation by the BDA to do so, I think that 2themax stole the show with his revelations this week, which should have reassured physical media collectors that studios still have a commitment to dee discs.
