Not to mention the "High" in HDR High Dynamic Range" of OLED isn't very high in comparison. Black levels & color saturation of the Z9D are excellent and competitive - the tradeoffs are worth it IMO.

I have to agree with you here. OLED in its current state is simply not bright enough for true HDR. And I also don't like the tech in general for many of the same reasons. FALD LED LCD is the current best solution imo.

Accounting update since ^: wow, I think this may be a record, in a roughly one month interval this time, almost 100,000 views to make 700,000 views to the HDR Discussion Thread. Wondering if we’ll meet that milestone at least by the end of the month (Dec. 31st midnight) with so many on vacation. Regardless, congrats to all the viewers and contributors - https://forum.blu-ray.com/misc.php?d...osted&t=276605 . From across the pond, Geoff has overtaken Dan. (Heat is dormant).

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, etc.

How many nits your Sony measures Geoff? ...And you can do 3D right? ...And no image retention right? ...Fabulous HDR, with ample brightness and Vision Dolby coming up.

2018 is going to be a good one.

Penton you the man, Merry Christmas!

That's just it. I don't deny that the amazing blacks & contrast of an OLED are out on their own in terms of quality (even that 100" ZD9 would still lose in a TV shootout) but for me it's also about great PQ and usability, my viewing habits are very particular and they're not well suited to displays that can suffer from image retention. I know this from first-hand experience and I don't want to spend £3.5K on a TV only to have to hand-hold it throughout its lifespan. The ZD9 is not perfect but my God, when it's on form it's incredible. And that'll do me just fine.

And this is where I have to disagree. Having used FALD LED LCD TV sets, the backlighting issues when you have bright objects against a dark background drive me scratty had me dreading watching any movies where any potential scenes like this popped up. Geoff describes the ZD9 doing this in the opening to the UHD BD of Life iirc.

This is the reason I sacked off LCD as a viable tech for watching movies and would rather sacrifice that peak brightness for the improved Dynamic Range (the 2 letters that follow the H in HDR) that OLED technology offers. Having said that, this really is a preference thing and as you stated, the above is IMO.

We are starting to see the same thing in the projector market, DLP is sort of like LCD in that it is much brighter for HDR but needs a dynamic dimming system for better black level; on the other hand, LCOS like OLED has natively higher contrast but also lower brightness than DLP for HDR.

Same thing regarding preference.

Vincent reiterated the problems that FALD has with starfields and whatnot in the 100" ZD9 review and those issues aren't going to go away, but I will genuinely trade the very occasional moments of disco-dancing backlighting for everything else than an LCD like the ZD9 offers to me. I'm not saying it's better, I'm just saying it's what works por moi.

Someone told me if the blacks are truer, bright areas will appear brighter than they really are. I suppose he was right. OLED is just much nicer display technology, but I'm happy to hang fire as the issues get ironed out. A bit of patience will also provide true 12-bit displays to the market for DV content. Until then, the dimming issues on my edge lit LED HG HDR TV have only been ruinous to one HDR experience, Dracula, which is seemingly shot in a way that will challenge any local dimming system so is probably a good recommendation as a demo disc to test out various dimming technologies. FALD will probably work well with it whereas my LG suffered with vertical halos.

Did any of our Euro membership see El Clásico (in HDR?) –
https://www.rapidtvnews.com/20171222...#axzz52JFXv4LG

Because the SDR broadcast I viewed here in the U.S. on BEIN was really degraded by the stadium shadows on the playing field and an HDR workflow and presentation should have definitely helped the situation.

follow-up to….
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...0#post14504850

No problemo in cracking the 700,000 viewership mark with 100,000 views in one month’s time, so a holiday brain teaser for TV technical gurus (Charles?), or those who aspire to be, question is -

Because it remains still too revolutionary, what specific parameter value made it into Rec. BT.2020 but not into Rec. BT.2100 (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...post14369414)? The answer is not in that slide series.

When I was a kid we had the same TV for 15 years because you were limited to PAL (or NTSC) anyway. So a good CRT would be more than enough

Once HD and flat screens happened it changed everything.

In fact I think today it's better to buy a mid-range TV every 2-3 years instead of paying the premium price for something that might be obsolete in that time span, leaving you far behind.

Everything changes so fast with OLED, micro-LED, HDR, I am not even sure what's gonna happen in 2 years
