Why on some UHD discs are there playability problems? Is due to work out the kinks in the manufacturing process and / or hardware problems in the UHD Blu-ray players?

When will the widespread DV grey bar issue finally be fixed?

My current reading of the spec is yes but not within the same piece of video. So to do so, you'd have to double up on the encodes.

Unknown but Lionsgate does seem to try everything at least once.

I put more of the blame on the manufacturing process and that will improve over time.

So effectively no? Aren't most DV encodes already filling up 100gb discs?

Do the HDR10+ dynamic metadata have to be carried over HDMI 2.1 using the HDMI 2.1 transmission of SMPTE ST 2094 dynamic metadata, or do they have to be embedded into the video signal like the Dolby Vision dynamic metadata?

Thanks

Would I be right in assuming that it's because the HDR10 and DV layers are so intrinsically linked on a Dolby Vision encoded disc that you can't just interrupt that process to bolt on the HDR10+ metadata?

Correct, effectively no. Most, but not all, are on 100GB discs. The first 2 Despicable Me releases only use 30-35GB of a 66GB disc. I haven't checked the third.

No HDMI 2.1 needed. 2.0b will get the job done at least in the 4K BD world.

Actually, it's the HDR10 stream that is the concern. It seems trivial to embed the dynamic metadata but compatibility issues could arise.

So, like Dolby Vision metadata, HDR10+ metadata are not using the HDMI 2.1 transmission of SMPTE ST 2094 dynamic metadata (i.e. HDMI 2.1 / CTA-861-G HDR Dynamic Metadata Datablock & HDR Dynamic Metadata Infoframe) in the 4K BD world.

And AVRs need to have a HDR10+ pass through feature.

Thanks

Let's make it confusing. Both SMPTE ST 2094 and CTA-861-G are being used but the spec explicitly says only HDMI 2.0 or higher is needed. Compatibility testing should be fun.

It’s very confusing, at least for me.

HDR10 needs HDMI 2.0a and higher.
HDR10+ only needs HDMI 2.0 and higher!

As far as I understand, compatibility testing of transmission of SMPTE ST 2094 / CTA-861-G dynamic metadata is defined in the upcoming HDMI 2.1 Compliance Test Specification.
Once passed the compliance test of the HDMI 2.1 transmission of dynamic metadata, the device maker can claim that his device is HDMI 2.1 compliant, as all features in HDMI 2.1 are optional and even if the device is using a HDMI 2.0 chipset.

Its simple any player that support HDR 10+ and any TV that supports it via it HDMI inputs has been fudged to support the necessary transmission, even if it doesn't fully support 2.1, 2.0A or 2.0B. Similar strange things have happened with earlier HDMI levels.

As far as I know, it is the first time that all features are optional.

This table is wrong. Not sure why this is even debatable anymore.

Panasonic has confirmed twice that HDMI 2.0 is enough, so has Vincent Teoh, and now so has 2themax.

Furthermore, the HDMI.org has stated that dynamic HDR can be added via firmware update on HDMI 2.0 devices.
