You guys have time for a pass-through question? When I bought my receiver two years ago, one of the selling points was 3d and 4k pass-through. So I was thinking that I should just be able to take my existing HDMI-out from my receiver and go straight into the TV. The 7100 comes with this odd dongle with extra HDMI inputs which the TV recognizes as Input One, Two, etc. If I have to use the dongle, fine, don't care. I remember when 4k Blu-Ray players first came out, and a writer for Blu-Ray.com apparently had a nightmare trying to get the thing to work, like Hanks, Paxton, and Bacon frantically scrambling and bypassing wires trying to survive in Apollo 13. I don't have a 4k 3D capable BRD (yet), I'm using a 3d-capable Sony Blu-Ray player and I'm counting on the TV to do the upscaling. Am I off-base in assuming that, thanks to the pass-through on the receiver, I should be good to go already just by using the 2.0 HDMI out from the receiver?

Thanks for the time. TV is now in Dallas, will probably be in San Antonio by Friday, but won't be delivered until Monday morning. I'm bouncing off the walls in anticipation.

Earth v1.1, awaiting v2.0
Question HDMI 2.1 finalized - 8K/10K resolution, variable refresh rate, eARC, new cable

Since the announcement in January 2017, a few new – very welcomed – features have been added, and these are perhaps some of the most exciting in the near term.
Quote:
•Quick Frame Transport (QFT) reduces latency for smoother no-lag gaming, and real-time interactive virtual reality.

•Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) allows the ideal latency setting to automatically be set allowing for smooth, lag-free and uninterrupted viewing and interactivity.
Is this somewhat related to the Sony DoVi FW update?

Could Sony/Dolby be implementing part(s) of the HDMI 2.1 spec?

What model is your receiver? I'm going to err on the side of caution and say it is likely that no, your receiver will not pass a 4k HDR signal. Your receiver needs to have HDMI 2.0a ports with HDCP 2.2 to pass 4k HDR. It may be possible that it got a firmware update to enable those specs, so there is no harm in trying. But I'd plan for it not to work.

It's the Sony STR-DN840. Claims to have 4k/3D Passthrough. Picked it up two years ago.

Did more digging...it doesn't pass-through HDCP 2.2 encrypted content. No biggie, when I get a 4k 3D blu-ray player later this year, I'll just send the blu signal to that goofy dongle and audio out to the receiver via optical (although there was a firmware update for the receiver last year...I'll have to see what that was all about...).

Thanks for the time and help.

No, that receiver cannot pass a 4k HDR signal. It has HDMI 2.0 ports, not 2.0a. It looks like the last firmware update upgraded it to pass 4k 8-bit signals, like for video games from a PC or PS4 Pro, but it can't do 10 bit HDR from UHD blu-ray players.

Yeah, I'll have to optical out to the receiver whenever I get a new BRD 4k 3D player and HDMI to the TV from the player...and then go looking for a new 7.2 receiver next Christmas.

Or buy one with dual HDMI outs. That's what I do.

Yup, use the HDMI 2 out to the receiver and HDMI 1 out to the TV until you get a new receiver. That way you don't lose lossless audio decoding. Just make sure your UHD Blu-ray player has dual HDMI outs.

And get a receiver that does at least 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding. You'll thank me as the extra effort to move to immersive surround is worth it.

The UHD BD has to support 3D...looking to pick one up in March or April.
