As far as I understand, PQ10 is similar to HDR10, and a legacy HDR10 compliant TV could be compatible with PQ10.
(BTW, thank you again, Richard!)

PQ10 = HDR10 without HDR10 metadata

PQ10 is one of the HDR formats adopted by ATSC 3.0 and DVB.

Yesterday, HDGuru posted an article about Dish's Olympics coverage. And they mentioned HDR10, which was not in the press release.
Quote:
Dish will offer Olympics programming in 4K Ultra HD resolution with HDR10 high dynamic range (HDR) on its channel 540, where it can be tuned using a Hopper 3 DVR and compatible 4K Ultra HDTV with HDR support.
I asked the author about where that came from. He said that during CES, Chris Satchell, CTO of Comcast, said the HDR feed they are providing to everyone is HDR10 because it is more prevalent than HLG. So they are taking the HLG feed provided by the OBS and converting it to HDR10, and then distributing that to all the US broadcasters. Another reason for the 24 hour delay. So it will be interesting to see what DirecTV does. Will they convert back to HLG? Or just provide the HDR10?

Long article ^.
As new toolsets emerge, there’s a tendency to deliver content at a level that is ‘good enough,’ and that can result in relying on generalists working across all post production skill sets. That lowers the bar and lowers expectations representing a threat to expert artists.

Good to see so much interest in sports and specifically the winter Olympics….I’ve been a longtime active documented fan - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...nz#post8517844

And here I’d thought that most everyone on this forum was exclusively critical narrative content (movie, episodic TV shows) freaks. But on that note, just so the non-sports minded readers don’t feel totally left out of the discussion -

although it’s my opinion, if other folks have also watched it by now, I think I’m safe in saying the consensus should be that Altered Carbon has purty darn good HDR, but is anyone having problems with thee amount of persistent shallow depth of focus using the Alexa65 and chosen lenses…. http://www.arrirentalgroup.com/news/...2_2018_02.html ?

I'm not so sure that anyone here actually cares about the Olympics. They care about 4K HDR content, which the Olympics will be offering, depending on service provider.

Here’s a thought. Instead of y’all knocking yourselves out with regards to the delivered HDR format for the winter Olympics, keep in mind that rigorous scientific testing (I know of such fancy things as I earned a doctorate degree, actually double degrees to be precise, but who's counting ) involves as least single-blinded participants (double-blinded is best but good luck employing that with AV testing). So, how about going into watching the Olympics in HDR not knowing for sure before you turn it on, if you’re viewing HLG or HDR10??

View the content in a non-light controlled room on a good, proven HDR capable TV and see if the ambient light significantly degrades the image quality. Then make your determination, in light of past promotions and theories made by HDR10 and HLG advocacy groups. I’m reminded of this old assessment…. http://www.hdtvtest.co.uk/news/4k-vs-201604104279.htm

I see. Well if they're more clinical about it. Follow the advice of the above post.

I guess it could have been even shallower, but they compromised with the producers to shoot in 5k crop mode (like Ghost in the Shell).

And since you mention the great HDR, shout out to colorist Jill Bogdanowicz who also did John Wick: Chapter 2 and Blade Runner: The Final Cut.

I found another article supporting the conversion from HLG to HDR10 for the Olympics delayed broadcast. Comcast does say they will be looking into using HLG in the future. If they go to live broadcast they really don't have much of a choice if it becomes a worldwide standard.

I know Bogdanowicz timed the Final Cut restoration in 2007, did she have a hand in the HDR grade too?

I posted this in another thread, but yes, Altered Carbon does have some glorious HDR. It's a shame that the show itself is such an abomination and a complete bore. Nevertheless, great HDR demo material.

It was done by Company 3, where she works and Ridley Scott has a close working relationship. So I assume so. Although Nakamura is his go-to guy nowadays, and he also had a hand in the original Final Cut DI.

Not really, no.

Yikes, 61% on RT? That's an even worse rating than I thought it would get.
