Alas, I fear I’ve sensitized you and others by now and a clean evaluation like I mentioned for the winter Olympics in HDR (HLG vs HDR10 going in clueless - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...g#post14694651 is best).

For Comcast viewers it is on a 24 hour delay and only available on VOD. As stated in the reference I gave above Comcast is converting the 4K HLG feed to 4K HDR10.

The 4K HDR broadcast on Comcast look extremely good. The ice skating competition was well lit and looked good even with the room lights on. The Opening Ceremony also looked fantastic. In the Opening Ceremony there was much more variations in lighting with many special effects. Again it looked good to me even with the room lights on.

My 2016 55" Sony 4k HDR/3D set showed up late Thursday...calibrating the thing has been...well...a learning experience. I've been messing with the settings for hours the last couple of days, even went to YouTube to see tutorials on the settings because I was getting very lost in the weeds. My calibration disc was intended for HDTV, this is a whole new journey down the tech rabbit hole.
Anyway, watched a few scenes from Empire of the Sun last night and was floored. It looks better than it did in cinemas. Also watched a few segments from Star Wars Episode IV, Fantasia/2000, and tested the 3D with the opening moments of Fantastic Beasts and The Little Mermaid, then rounded things out with some streaming 4K content from Netflix (Planet Earth II, Dave Chappelle). Really happy so far, although I'm sure I'll still be fiddling with it for days to come. Next up...a 4k/3D blu-ray player...I only have two 4k HDR discs (Guardians Vol. 2 and Dunkirk), so I'm in no particular hurry, maybe by June. Last edited by Ernest Rister; 02-10-2018 at 10:58 PM. |

![]() One last specific question, although I feel you’ve already intuitively answered it with your comments above ![]() Did most scenes show the bulk of the HDR image to appear very dark? Please, just a yes or no answer will do to ^ , as I’m looking to see if I can make a point here, not contradicting you ![]() ![]() |

No, but I wonder if that was because it was converted from HLG. Another variable is my 65" Sony 850C. I have 7 4K HDR Blu-ray movies and I have never felt that any of these movies were too dark.

![]() Point being, I’ve heard that in the past on other websites sometimes a reference has been cited as an expert account on aspects of HDR and WCG. So last year around this time, I copied said article (from Light Illusion) and have taken a screenshot of the paragraph which at the time I felt somewhat scared or turned off a lot of HDR enthusiasts as to the viewing feasibility of ST 2084 based HDR content with its assertions – ![]() I’m quite happy that thee above ^ didn’t ultimately turn out to be much of an issue of importance at all for you (nor perhaps many others?, as I haven’t checked other forums or the media journalists for opinions with regards to their viewing impressions) in enjoying the HDR10 Comcast imagery of the winter Olympics so far. P.S. Not only happy for you, but also happy for me, as on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon in our family room, I’m far too lazy and tired out to ‘very carefully control my environmental light level’.
