True, and with the recent positive news for HLG I guess Dolby is worried that the majority of the broadcast market will choose it.

I think the AV journalists will start being more aware of 4K HFR once it gets supported by HDMI.

Thanks, mate. I appreciate the advice; I really want to get a 4K TV now but not if HDR 4K TVs become cheaper soon. For now, I'll continue to enjoy 4K gaming on my 28" monitor (but no 4K BluRay because my monitor doesn't meet the requirements for 4K output from my XBOX ONE S).

So, what would be the impacts of ICtCp:
ICtCp is a good way to encode 4:2:0 video but the major issue that Apple found during testing is that it makes color issues worse if video is converted between ICtCp and YCbCr. So realistically the only way that ICtCp is going to be used is if HDR video is recorded as RGB. An easy problem to solve but it would add to the production cost. So far I have heard little about ICtCp outside of Dolby but maybe that will start to change once it gets added to HDMI.

I don’t know Richard. Although not having HDMI input, many of them in the past have commented upon the superb video quality of Sony’s 4K HDR BVM-X300 professional oled monitor.

HDR History....below is a pic of Dado V. (colorist) holding the prototype of the very first Atomos HDR on set monitor....

which proved very valuable as it not only enabled the DP standing alongside to view the images in HDR on a battery powered device as they were being shot, but also allowed the DP and colorist to easily tweak the imagery on set for creative intent....

in the making of this short film for Panasonic....

Since Stacey S. has acknowledged some interest in Atomos products with his postings->https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...n#post12578204 and I especially like the SoCal motocross footage , thought I’d mention to any budding filmmakers out there that the Shogun Inferno https://www.atomos.com/shogun-inferno) is shipping this month (finally)....

4K HFR falls into the future of consumer products and a lot of AV journalists don't want to hit the hornet's nest by promoting something that would anger their advertisers. Once 4K HFR gets added to HDMI though they will at least be able to talk about it in a reserved manner.

Technicolor is making a good case for having some kind of HDR CALM Act by saying that branding elements will "pop out of the screen even more" with HDR.

Granted, protecting direct financial or other more subtle (and devious) perk type benefits (without a traceable quid pro quo between the symbiotic culprits) may be a large part of it, but I believe it’s also partly because of a simple lack of insight (actually ignorance) as to what has great potential and what does not. As none of them at the time (in late 2012/2013), unlike us here , appreciated the significance of this presentation with regards to perceptual signal coding…. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...d#post12628697 at the 2012 SMPTE Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition where the paper was presented despite the fact that a few months later it was then published the following year in the SMPTE journal for more widespread public consumption and critique.

It wasn’t until the marketers became involved that the mainstream *got it*.

Of course since then (2012-2013), the tweeter dees-tweeter dumbs of AV social media have become paper proliferators without expressing the knowledge to adequately critique a paper’s true value…or important deficiencies/omissions specifically as one would do in ‘Journal Club’ of teaching programs leading to professional careers in many scientific disciplines.

Full Disclosure:
The above post with the Atomos references was produced in the spirit of a teaching experience to others. I have no financial interest, nor have ever received any perks from Atomos in the past or as recently as at IBC in Amsterdam, although their style cracks me up …..

For the motorcar HDR fans I’ll balance out the above linked vimeo motocross footage with two more wheels when I have more time to post. Later.

According to Hao Chen of the Amazon Lumberyard team, contrary to a Dolby Vision TV, a HDR10 TV doesn’t have the proper tone mapping feature, the tone mapping should be implemented in the external game application asking the TV of its HDR capabilities. This HDR10 TV capability query should be done by the OS system software via the GPU.
http://www.gdcvault.com/play/1023597/

If (all (?)) HDR10 TVs could be able to send their HDR capabilities to an external device, this external device could be an enhanced HDR10 media player with a (standard) world-class HDR10 tone mapping [standard = known / adopted by the mastering people].

The free Amazon Lumberyard game engine is supporting Dolby Vision.
"Dolby Vision, one of the standard for HDR is currently supported on the Windows platform. Lumberyard's Dolby Vision implementation works on legacy cards as well, e.g. NVidia GTX980 or older, PASCAL is not required, same goes for AMD.
HDR 10 is the other standard, which Windows and Xbox has announced plans to support through the OS, and other consoles might too. When that occurs, Lumberyard will support it as well."

Interesting development in streaming 4K:

http://variety.com/2016/digital/news...ce-1201859416/

According to American Cinematographer, "MERIDIAN, is a suspenseful noir short directed and co-written by ASC Technology Committee Chairman Curtis Clark, is now streaming on Netflix. The project, covered in our October 2016 issue, is specifically designed to illustrate how the convergence of 4K, HDR, wide color gamut, and other high-end image acquisition advancements might enhance the viewer experience for the Web-based streaming service."

I’ve been alerted to a reporter being enthusiastic about the visual quality of HFR HDR and penned his experience as I was emailed this article today…. http://www.insideci.co.uk/articles/i...-analysis.aspx

Furthermore with regards to HFR (evidenced by scientific testing), other pertinent points not mentioned in his article:

I didn't think the Oppo would have Dolby Vision support.

According to Dolby reps, DV won't be included in players until some time in the second half of 2017.
