Samsung started putting HDR10+ on their sets in 2017 so 2019 is the critical year to see the progress of HDR10+ adoption. As hardware (and AI) becomes increasingly powerful I still believe a more than acceptable solution is for each HDR frame to be analyzed adjusted to the characteristics of the display.

I'm interested in AR and coincidentally I'm a presenter on a panel discussion next week at CE Week NY and we have AR and AI among other Smart and integrated Internet of Things discussion.

What platform and AR game were you engaged with?

Influence of Screen Size and Field of View on Perceived Brightness

‘We present a study into the perception of display brightness as related to the physical size and distance of the screen from the observer. Brightness perception is a complex topic, which is influenced by a number of lower and higher order factors - with empirical evidence from the cinema industry suggesting that display size may play a significant role. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a series of user studies exploring brightness perception for a range of displays and distances from the observer that span representative use scenarios. Our results suggest that retinal size is not sufficient to explain the range of discovered brightness variations, but is sufficient in combination with physical distance from the observer. The resulting model can be used as a step towards perceptually correcting image brightness perception based on target display parameters. This can be leveraged for energy management and the preservation of artistic intent. A pilot study suggests that adaptation luminance is an additional factor for the magnitude of the effect.’
I'm also very interested in and have much experience in the need for an optimum peak luminance (and MLL) for proper tone mapping and preserving the full HDR effect that's in the content. Of course, this assumes all other elements are equal, e.g. Following the PQ curve as close as possible with a gradual roll off up to the peak luminance.

This is very valuable and important information to learn if you want to understand and for practical purposes get the best at your home HDR experience. Bravo to Penton-Man, Site management, mods and members for making Blu-ray.com as great as it is.

I was using the PlayStation VR (PSVR) headset and using the BBC’s sport app.

As for AR, I feel it needs smart glasses before it can be utilised to its full advantage. AR on a smartphone or tablet, in my opinion, is simply too limiting. For me, apps will only really begin to reach their potential if images are in front of you and gesture motions are integrated somehow, AR on a phone just doesn’t excite me.

As for VR, I can’t speak highly enough of this tech. The potential is mind blowing to me, everything from games to productivity. Like I say, it needs a resolution bump and wireless headsets but once that is the case, I sincerely hope it can move beyond niche and into the mainstream. Sport experiences like the BBC’s efforts are crucial to achieving this aim I feel. As well as the potential for concerts, theatre etc..
Gaming wise, there are some very talented people producing unique gaming experiences like Statik, Moss, Superhot etc.. that make VR by far the best way to experience those games. Of course, more headsets need to be sold otherwise the risk is obviously great for many studios in my opinion. In my opinion, VR needs to be promoted far far more than it is at present.

Overall, I absolutely love the tech and I hope beyond hope we get a 2nd generation.

Weren't you like super worried about people watching everything on their smart watches in years to come? How is this all that different in terms of the effect it might have on the collective viewing experience as a whole? Not trying to be a smartass, just wondering.

You can have a collective experience in VR now in a cinema setting.

Yeah, the original Swedish film was great, didn’t care much for the remake.

We’re getting it - released on YouTube about 2 weeks ago and viewed over 140 million times and counting, a ‘pantheon’ of female influencers ( Chloe Kim is one of them - https://ew.com/music/2018/06/06/maro...ike-you-video/) in this music video (shot with a Sony Venice [Super35 4K] and monitored in 4K on a Sony x300 by the cinematographer linked to in my signature who also did, back in the day, ‘911’).
