I honestly don't even know what to say in response to that. But just. wow.

Burn-in has happened to an estimated 9% of OLED purchasers according to a poll over on AVS. You read about in-home instances of it happening all the time on various tech and enthusiast forums. Even if that number is exacerbated, it's still a real thing. Some people have had burn-in on multiple sets. That's why the OLED situation is commonly referred to as "the panel lottery". You never know what you're going to get. Bad panels happen all the time. I have no doubt that at least half of cases are likely due to the "misuse" of the OLED television, but it can still happen to anyone. You also gotta realize that some people will defend their own expensive purchases to the death. By that I mean half of people that get burn-in won't even complain about it because it's something they spent good money on and therefore it was a wise investment. Also, if you happen to sell in an affluent neighborhood, then a little bit of money isn't an issue to most of your customers either. If the set performs well, they will happily plop down another 2K on a new one. That's just the cost of being an enthusiast/early adopter to some.

I watch ESPN, sports, I game (things with HUDs), I pass out on my couch with the DVR or movies playing all the time, and I would never want to have to babysit my main television. Getting burn-in would gravely bother me. Any way you slice it, there is a small amount of inherent risk there, and I can't afford to replace a new set after two years. Not to mention, people have basically no idea the kind of statistics behind how well OLED is going to hold up 5 or 6+ years down the line. The tech is that new. I'm not one to spread FUD but that's just the way it is. For YEARS salesman/industry insiders/people said burn-in on plasma wasn't even a real thing and we all know how that turned out.

I have no qualms with OLED technology; I wish I owned one. If I could afford multiple televisions and had the space, I would own one. They sound really nice. But it is an undeniable fact is there is inherent risk involved.

Thanks for bring this up. I know it's a bold statement. Here's some of the reasons we are successful in marketing OLED TVs with minimal risk of burn-in.

We explain best practices on the care of OLED TVs to our clients. Just like we do on how to get the best out of all of your a/v equipment.

Another reason is that many of our OLED TVs are sold to enthusiasts who understand emissive displays and have owned plasma TVs.

Finally, many of our clients order their TVs with our full q/c, proper break-in (that stabilizes the panel) and calibration. So they get an aged panel that has gone through a quality control process and panel stabilization. Our full q/c eliminates the "panel lottery" concerns.

In all fairness it's possible some of our clients have burn-in, but we have not beed told by anyone and we sell a lot of OLED TVs.

You know, with all this talk about OLED, I'm almost glad I didn't go with one of LG's panels...

My 2005 model mid-range plasma would easily get image retention. I was careful and aware of it, though.
I even played games on it and stuff!
Image retention might have taken 1-3 minutes to "wipe away" from a black, or white screen/background.
Never had burn-in, though.

My 2012 Panny plasma was much, MUCH less prone to image retention. Even when it did have static images frozen on the screen, it went away within 20-40 seconds in worst case scenarios.

My LG C7 hasn't even hinted at any image retention.

I mostly just watch movies and TV shows... the TV is on 2-4 hours on weekdays, up to 12 hours on a Saturday.
It's been a year. I haven't done any babying with the TV at all. I've even played Battlefield 1 and SW: Battlefront, Switch games (including the Street Fighter legacy set)... no image retention at all.

Could it happen? Sure. Of course.
Has it happened to me? Heh. No.

So I've never had the unfortunate experience of OLED burn-in after owning 4 long-term. While the aforementioned lottery can apply to BI susceptibility, in my experience it has much more to do with uniformity (particularly near black), which makes some content simply unwatchable (or requires a total zen moment of blissful ignorance) due to columns of varying brightness and subsequent streaking on camera pans. When it appears, it's bad enough that it has me considering calling on my extended warranty for the G6.

The banding, streaking and general uniformity issues with OLED seem to be another all or nothing kinda deal, people's sets are either blighted by it or are completely and utterly pristine. Dat panel lottery.

I'm not sure I've seen any that would qualify as "utterly pristine", but the unnerving thing is LGD not applying a little more screening in the QC process, especially on SRP'd $20k screens. I think the size difficulty is probably what led them to pass this one off as acceptable.

I went through almost a dozen of the OLEDs in the past couple of years.

None of them were pristine, the best ones were not distracting or tolerable at most, but still having what I would call remarkably bad low IRE uniformity or worse, color tinting.

Still not the level of quality and craftsmanship I'd expect for the price of the units, though. After going through so many it just really gave me this bad feeling that LG is using the enthusiast market to beta test their hail mary attempt to take over the market. So far it seems to be working.
