My Sony has brightness, contrast, gamma, black level. 65” Z9D.
For SDR they are 15, 90, -1, and 50 respectively.

Take your pick as to how that translates to Samsung speak.

It's not "definite", but I would if I was you.

That picture was from my 2016 KS. Yours may be different.

Not at all, those are just silly defaults for HDR it seems. To fix, do this in Movie mode:
a) Play some SDR content. Set picture settings correctly for your SDR sources.
b) in the same picture mode, play some HDR content. Whilst it is playing, set Backlight and Contrast both to Max.
c) stop the HDR content and play SDR again. Again remaining in Movie mode, observe that the TV has switched back to the "SDR" settings.

The TV will remember both sets of settings and auto-switch within the movie mode.

My ire was at Samsung because it's difficult to explain the above and most users will not do it; on the previous models the defaults meant HDR looked correct.

Let me try this a different way, then...

What is backlighting callled on your Sony?

Honestly -- I don't know if you're trying to be snide or sarcastic (per the ebb around these parts) but I truly can't understand why you can't divulge what your TV manufacturer (Sony) calls the backlighting control.

Unless you're not running an LCD?

I will not take your bait. Don’t be rude to people who are trying to help.

I tried to provide a frame of reference. I do not own a Samsung.
You need assistance from a Samsung owner. I don’t know why they won’t step up to answer your questions. Sony doesn’t name their controls the same way as Samsung. Have you looked at Rtings.com for your model?

At this point, I am bowing out.

TAKE MY BAIT?

I am NOT baiting you -- and YOU'RE the one being rude to ME by going around in circles not telling me if you're referring to the backlighting setting of your Sony.

Incredible. You're purposely not telling me if you're referring to your set's BACKLIGHTING, and I'm the one baiting and being rude...

I'm the one who should have bowed out of this thread a long time ago after I took the time to write out all the specific settings for my TV and NO ONE bothered to even assist me or reply. Instead, there's a myriad of talk about Canada, the Olympics, soccer and a heap of other nonsese not even related to HDR.

No need for you to bow out because you think I am baiting you by trying to get assistance with my display (ridiculous); I'm unsubscribing from the thread. At least someone over in the display calibration section is willing to help, unlike here.

Also, although not mentioned on imdb at this time, Lowe’s Awakenhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt7128316/

will be the first feature film to be color graded in HDR specifically on and for the Samsung Onyx (https://www.roundabout.com/onyx-cinema-screen/)
at Roundabout on the westside.

I haven't yet seen said movie so I may yet have to eat some crow regarding them digital beauty passes, but for all the refinements I'm still yet to see that effect look anything other than a load of digital smearing plastered all over someone's face. I'm kinda bemused as to why it gets used so much because it's so frickin' obvious to me, and if it's obvious to me then it must be plain as day to the people who are actually doing it...but if it's actually contracted by the stars then there's no getting around it.

It's funny because I just watched a movie last night where this sort of thing was painfully obvious, the movie in question being Super Troopers 2. It's not people's whole faces that are getting smoothed but mostly the bags under their eyes and it just looks so weird with these textureless pockets of smoothing on an otherwise normally wrinkled & lined face.

lol @ Intelli, you do have a way with people bruv

^ they say the Fairmont Grand Del Mar was/is a fine hotel to stay at and chill with an iced drink when shooting a feature film with a Sony Venice with its fine dynamic range and an intended 4K DI

you won’t, I’d say the effect in some scenes is related to the principal photography as you rightly questioned
