It's been a while, and I know it's been tweaked, but it wouldn't surprise me if it just shifted the entire curve up - I think last time I checked it out it did blow retain less highlight detail than the DV cinema mode. You'd have to ask someone else that still owns the LG OLED for a more in depth analysis though. |

Since I hear a lot of talk about tone mapping on LG Oled, if we had an LG Oled 2016, 2017, and 2018 side by side displaying the same source in HDR simultaneously, would the dimming on the 2016 model be very obvious even to the unitiated?

2 points of interest:
Having Wonder Woman clip means WB has boots on the ground in this contest. What’s the point of HDR10+ firmware in all these players, if not to use them to play discs? If all of this really works in some homes, then some users will be pleased. OTOH Samsung has surely gimped themselves by only updating 2018 hardware, and pissing off 2016 and 2017 owners. Dolby has a huge lead in this race with 3 years of hardware and DV is getting some traction with advertising and positive impact from Dolby Cinema showings. I have no idea what Sammy’s endgame is here, will it all play out in some kind of slow motion compromise? I think a quick and final end to this contest has passed us by, and it may be that a year from now before people’s crystal balls will have a clearer picture. |

Not that any of this matters to anyone outside of owners of select Samsung and Panasonic 2018 sets, anyways. |

Given that the studios are working with the display makers to come up with a universal HDR format for both future cinema displays and home displays, I can't see there being "re-releases" of any UHD-BD content with another HDR format until that rolls around in the next few years. Streaming on the other hand, will incorporate as many HDR formats as the services and studios will go for, just to cover the bases.

I sure hope this isn't going to create a new dynamic metadata war as far as physical content is concerned. Are people going to be forced to own both a HDR10+ capable rig as well as a Dolby Vision capable one to get the most out of their discs? If those reports are accurate then it's just going to muddy the waters even more for home video, as if HD DVD vs BD wasn't bad enough.

I.e. HDR10+ just replaces HDR10, but if you don't have HDR10+ capability you can still run a HDR10 layer. One of the hurdles was getting HDR10+ to be able to replace HDR10 as the DV base layer - perhaps they've finally solved that too and now they can all live in harmony. |

+ isn't doing anything different regarding grading as it's still done scene by scene at the source level (the biggest misconception going with HDR10 is that it's all fixed to one level of brightness, but that only applies to the static metadata itself), only now they can analyse the content and generate scene by scene metadata outside of a Dolby mastering environment to allow a compatible TV to properly map the content. Heck, even the first pass of Dolby metadata is done automatically, it'd take too long for a colourist to regrade the various HDR trim passes (600 nits, 1000, 2000, whatever) from scratch. Still, it's a bit ironical that Fox are the ones spearheading this because they've been rocking 1000-nit MDL metadata from the start and so there are very few UHDs of theirs that have major problems with poor mapping on certain TVs anyway. And seeing as the other big studio that's involved (Warners) don't appear to be ditching DV any time soon then a TV with good HDR10 mapping and Dolby Vision will still be better equipped than most. The FOMO is strong with this one, but not really all that justified. |

They have to get Sony and LG on board, in order to get any traction.
