Now we’re getting somewhere - https://twitter.com/IRTpresse/status...28163734675457

Considering the science of more detailed images rather than marketing.
(for newbies: 100 in Europe and 120 in America as the frame-rate)

Check out these two Facebook videos from LG's CEDIA press conference this morning. Tim Alessi was very kind to give Value Electronics two acknowledgements for our designing and development of two exhibit areas in LG's booth.

I designed the lifestyle 77" C8 OLED room and the HU80KA theater demo room.

So is “HDR Video” picture mode the actual correct setting to use?

I was playing around with the picture settings on my 4K TV and it’s weird.. for some stuff, I think it’s the best that this TV has looked. So far the main thing I’ve watched using this setting is Return of the King extended edition. It looks really good (though some shots / flesh tones almost look a little bit too warm, but I may just not be used to looking at them like that).

But then if I put in a DVD (such as Superman The Animated Series or The Simpsons) it looks kind of awful so I have to put it back to the “standard” mode setting.

I haven’t tried it with an actual 4K HDR Disc but I can only assume that it’ll look pretty amazing with the “HDR Video” setting.

I just thought it was odd that it made a regular Blu-ray Disc look amazing, but a DVD looked pretty bad.

Not sure about how much of PQ is Dolby's creation.”

Penton, what are your feelings about this.”

Feelings backed with documented facts:
Sometime in the Spring of 2012, vis-à-vis an input document to the respective working party, Dolby introduced the picture quantizer (PQ) EOTF to the ITU. So, they were pretty much, without question, the developers of this new EOTF. Somewhere on this forum several years ago I posted a pic of the first page of the input document as proof, as these input documents are not publicly accessible. I don’t have time to search for it now, but the energetic among you could try using the search word ITU.

Later on that same year, Dolby submitted an additional input document to the same working party reiterating the rationale behind the perceptual quantizer that is the basis of the EOTF that was proposed and this time added the details of a subjective study involving 30 some participants to determine min. and max. display luminances, etc. based on viewer preferences, which was later presented here at Stanford - https://talks.stanford.edu/scott-daly-timo-kunkel/

Then later on in the year 2014, in the non-broadcast arena, the PQ EOTF function was adopted in SMPTE ST 2084 with this exclusive forum (any AV forum for that matter) heads-up to its publication here.
And looking back at decisions about colorimetry among different stakeholders in 2013….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...yz#post8249641

It went totally unreported on other AV forums (as none AFAIK are privy to the details of projects in SMPTE working groups), but alternatively, here on Blu-ray.com the pros and cons were discussed rather extensively between Richard and myself with regards to the proposal set forth by Hollywood studios and Dolby for standardization in SMPTE which was to include PQ as an EOTF and using the XYZ color space for encoding (as opposed to BT.2020).

Flashing forward (and anyone attending is privy to this) -

HDR presentations on Tuesday, October 23 at the upcoming SMPTE 2018 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition in LA (perusing a couple of these abstracts reminds me of a past discussion we had with Bruce back in 2016 related to the value of a thick negative - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post12135751 )

Click on the Tuesday tab and scroll down - http://www.cvent.com/events/smpte-20...7ed05d306.aspx

There are also some AI presentations that day and rather than all theory, I hope to see some data with results from working products/devices like with the first FDA approved AI device for an ocular condition which was just published several days ago here….https://www.nature.com/articles/s417...5-77e4c161555f

What hardware make and model are you referring to? This is a display I'm guessing?

I don’t know about your model, I have a Z9D.
Do you have Cinema Home and Cinema Pro modes? With proper settings you would use one for SDR viewing and the other for HDR10.

Like last year, pictured here in the ‘locked off’ hyperlink Pete again will be presenting at the annual SMPTE tech conference, but this time on HDR and broadcast.

Thanks for the concern! I've always been very thin. I'm 6' 2" and 156 lbs. Been that weight all of my adult life.

I've been enjoying bike riding while in San Diego.

Good trail for locals as well as tourists, including their spouses and children (Bayshore bikeway also known as Silver Strand)
