Their announcement at IFA 2017 was clearly at least one full year early. |

16-bit and higher is the new target, with the Cinema LED tech that will roll into cinemas and eventually, homes. Studios and digital cinema vendors are working together to develop a standardized HDR format to use for both venues, as the wide transition to that tech draws closer in the next few years. 12-bit isn't really on the map at this point and the computer side of things is happy to stay where they are for the next several years.

Meh, it was the same with plasma. You're never gonna get the cognoscenti to own up to an issue like this. Sure, it takes a constantly-rotated torture test to bring it up, as opposed to the babysitting that the ardent faithful do with their sets, but it's always been lurking.

and I suspect that they will sell out quickly. I believe the price is $17/person which I think is quite reasonable for all the amenities. * if that ^ link doesn't go thru for everyone then type in a new window #TOPGUNONMIDWAY and look for Top Gun Movie Nights on the list to get there via an indirect route Last edited by Penton-Man; 09-11-2018 at 11:58 PM. Reason: added * with phrase but link in first paragraphy may now be fixed |

The upper line of JVCs projectors are true 12 bit end to end, from the input, video processing and panel drivers. At least according to the engineers I talk to at JVC. Their entry model is 10 bit on the input side and 12 bit on the output/panel drivers.

Would love to see examples of true 12-bit direct-view panels so as to provide optimal HDR presentation.

From what I have read Blu-ray disks only support 8 bit color and currently only some sources such as Netflix 4K along with 4K HDR Blu-ray gives you 10 bit color so on a 10 bit TV how would the Dolby Vision 12 bit be of benefit?

According to the Dolby document "Dolby Vision – Profiles and levels", https://www.dolby.com/us/en/technolo...les-levels.pdf ![]() the UHD Blu-ray players use profile 7; and profile 7 "has" 2 sub-profiles: 1. (Original) Profile 7 Full Enhancement Layer decoding the base layer video stream and the enhancement layer video stream. 2. Profile 7 Minimal Enhancement Layer (MEL) "without instantiating a secondary HEVC decoder for the enhancement layer". "The MEL consists of Dolby Vision composer and content metadata" (i.e. without the enhancement layer video stream). "Base layer/enhancement layer full alignment is required, as documented in Blu-ray Disc Association Specifications. The MEL can be used to minimize the processing requirements for the enhancement layer and thus ensure broader use among UltraHD Blu-ray SoCs." |
