If that’s ^ too rudimentary for some new readers to the thread like puze. Here be a bit more advanced.
A discerning person might ask - where did this ‘Barten thing’ ……

originate from that Dolby used to create JND steps (visual threshold) and arrive at the conclusion that a 12-bit signal (as in Dolby Vision as opposed to HDR10 or HDR10+) is necessary to prevent banding with the PQ transfer function?

Short version, a little background on the Peter Barten model, see 2nd heading “Human Vision and the DICOM GSDF” - https://siim.org/page/displays_chapter3
Long version, p. 17 (published in 2011) - http://dicom.nema.org/Dicom/2011/11_14PU.PDF

yeah, I'm rushing, just ignore the last sentence at the very end, as it's repetitive.

There is actually some good stuff in that there thread. But, as with this thread, the good stuff is not always going to be there on a platter in the first unread post whenever a new player enters the game. Always in motion are forums...

I dunno Geoff. Seems to me to be dominated by this type motion –

With too much (for my taste) sentiment by a current or former member of another forum trying to campaign an idea on Blu-ray.com, I guess because HTF died long ago.

What does this have to with HDR? Lemme just say that I cannot wait to see this movie on UHD, there are so many blown highlights throughout and if the HDR can improve those - even just a lil' bit, I don't need to see every filament in every bulb to get my HDR rocks off - then it's going to look even more stunning, what with all of that bold colour that's already there. I actually thought it was shot on film, such is the texture that the image holds and I even spotted a trace of density flutter - but no, it was shot on Alexa! If this didn't have some kind of film emulation LUT I'll be amazed.

Hell, there’s more ‘on topic’ cutting edge material just in the hyperlinks of that ^ post to keep serious folks interested in, than in 30 pages of some of these on topic ‘debates’ we see too often.
A Star is Born will be featured in Nov. issue of AC. Meanwhile, peruse this - https://entertainment.inquirer.net/2...enom-star-born
And note to Kris D., in that piece ^ is a motorcycle association to this previously posted resume - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post15626055

We tend to do that a lot with whatever Ruined says. And thanks for the heads up re: AC 11/18.

FYI, Google Chrome 70 is officially out today. It enables YouTube AV1 support. You can enable AV1 here: https://www.youtube.com/testtube

And then use this playlist to test: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...eZUlNUQAVLwrZS

Right now it seems to be limited to 1080p on my machine. And I don't have an HDR enabled PC, but maybe those that do can check to see if HDR is working on that RED HDR Reel.

But I didn't want to mention it lest it sounded a bit too snidey and a bit too points-scory, not that that's stopped me before, but I didn't wanna assume too much. I gave you too much credit for that.

You've gotta bear in mind that this really is how this thread rolls, bruce may have started it but Penton is very much the keeper of the flame (it's Club Penton mk. 2 in all but name) and most people are grateful enough for all the technological insights that they take the various trips off the reservation in their stride. For newcomers it will undoubtedly be confusing but, again I ask, what it is you're actually after with HDR specifically that would lead you to look in this thread in the first place? "HDR Discussion" is kind of a wide-ranging title, even if it was all entirely on-topic there would be plenty of different discussions regarding what HDR is and what HDR does which, as I said, is currently being debated in the crayons thread anyway.
You make it sound like that my absence from a thread like this because I didn’t have a truly HDR capable set before was a bad thing. I understood that my set wasn’t super amazing but had decent tone mapping (nothing ever looked out of place), but as far as chiming in about real HDR, I would have had very little to say. In that context, I’m not sure what ‘I gave you too much credit’ is supposed to mean.

What did I expect to see in this thread though? I don’t know… not several posts in a row by the same forum member going on and on about behind the scenes Top Gun stuff. Pretty sure we have a ‘Movies’ section where a thread for that stuff probably already exists, and if there isn’t a thread for it, there certainly could be.

Maybe the length of this thread should have said enough, I suppose. I guesse the relevant topics for me, at least when it comes to HDR, will be the individual film threads.

I said I’d leave well enough alone and buy you all a round if you’re ever in my neck of the woods though. Nobody seems to address the actual point of my long post, which was basically, ‘In my bones I don’t feel my reaction to the thread upon my entry was unwarranted whatsoever, but as I said, my goal isn’t really to rock the boat so, I relent’. Again, no hurt feelings or anything.

As far as you Geoff, you’re more than welcome to be straight with me whenever, wherever. I respect your opinion on this forum because you’re not full of hot air… like so many other people out there. Far too many people tend to mistake honesty for kindness, because it always becomes a bad quality when they don’t like when you’re pointing your finger at them. I have no hard feelings though. People, even the best of friends in the world, don’t always agree on things. To take offense merely because you and I don’t see eye-to-eye in this particular scenario would be silly. Don’t ever feel the need to tip-toe around me for the sake of diplomacy. I can take it. I’m a big boy. Promise

Heads-up

A few months ago, along with more confidential matters, one of the owners of Blu-ray.com emailed me this “….I recently added a Movies Anywhere section to the site, the whole digital movies space is very fractured so we'll see where it goes “ .

To the later, Digital Hollywood. is going on this week. I don’t know, but there might be a little UHD/HDR talk scattered throughout some of the presentations/panels here - http://www.videodigitalhollywood.com/

I’m informed that a live webcast of a Future of Film panel is on the Wednesday list. Not sure of its content or value though, folks will have to check for themselves. Ted (formerly of RED Digital Cinema) and now with Paramount Pictures is one of the panelists.

Not really referring exclusively to Ruined, I’m told Doctorossi is a HTF emigrant whose primary affection reverted to the utterances on that forum rather than Blu-ray.com. Came back here once HTF essentially died.

I suspect he’ll do everything he can to keep the ‘crayon thread’ active despite the fact ‘the issue’ presented by the original poster should have been debated out in a few pages at most. Next, I wouldn’t be surprised if sharkshark (Jason from Canada) showed up in that thread in order to keep the premise alive.
