PC with the Snapdragon 8cx can connect up to two external 4K HDR monitors.

The Snapdragon 8cx, which is the most powerful Snapdragon SoC to date, is expected to begin shipping in commercial devices in Q3 of 2019.

We'll have to see how it plays out, but it may be in a league of its own because of the visuals. This almost looks like a Michael Bay movie where you may need am oxygen mask just to get through it :P
Some that come to mind are...
  • Nosferatu (1922)
  • Frankenstein (1931)
  • King Kong (1933)
  • The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
  • Godzilla (1954)
  • Them! (1954)
  • Jaws (1975)
  • Alien (1979)
  • Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979)
  • The Thing (1982)
  • Aliens (1986)
  • Jurassic Park (1993)
  • Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995)
  • Gamera 2: Attack of Legion (1996)
  • Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris (1999)

I think these represent some of the best the "genre" has to offer. Not just good of their kind, but great films period.

If we're talking giant monsters exclusively, that obviously brings the number down. But even so, King Kong '33, Godzilla '54 and the '90s Gamera trilogy have set the bar high. I can only speak for myself, but expecting it to be as good or better (!) than these would just be setting myself up for disappointment. I'd rather go in with lower expectations and let the film surprise me.

An example of why everything you read on the internet is not accurate (and, just because someone/something is ‘credentialed’ (sfgate) doesn’t make them right) - "and ride a motorcycle down what appears to be an airplane runway...."https://m.sfgate.com/movies/article/...k-13454608.php

That ^ runway and abbreviated footage is not from Lake Tahoe airport, but actually from the naval base in Coronado - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post15634835

Pixel defects, image sticking, treatment of illegal signals, etc. were verified subjectively. The results showed – as expected – that currently available professional HDR-capable monitors differ significantly in several aspects. This is not necessarily a bad thing. As the differences tend to be accompanied by differences in price, depending on the application, trade-offs may be made. For example, the measured video delay varied between roughly 20 and 60 ms (2160p, HLG, top left quadrant). This may be critical in certain (live, camera-operated) use cases, but irrelevant for simple post-production setups.

If that laptop is a typical system for this silicon, then there's no disk drive and all the content would be streaming?

Yeah, when I think of monsters, what comes to mind, is both classic horror monsters and Godzilla, Kong, not just 100 story tall reptiles.

A portable Windows PC based on Snapdragon 8cx with USB 3.1 connectivity can interface with an external UHD BD drive.

Is it possible Dolby had to MEL for UHD disc support and the FEL was affecting bitrates? And the FEL would could be saved for streaming.

But streaming is based around a single-layer 10-bit encoded version anyway, it doesn't require an enhancement layer be it 'full' or otherwise. Most DV discs from Paramount and Universal have quite sizeable enhancement layers, as do StudioCanal's recent wave of DV UHDs, it's more Warners and Sony who persist with the metadata-only enhancement layers and 4000-nit base layer encodes - which neither Par, Uni or SC support as they master the HDR10 layers to 1000 nits.

So Paramount and Universal, StudioCanal are willing to spend the money on colorist time and FEL.

The colourists aren't grading DV 'full' enhancement layers, they're grading DV masters at source. The absence/presence of the former has absolutely nothing to do with the latter, the cost of employing a DV colourist doesn't change no matter if the ultimate destination for the content is a single-layer stream, dual-layer MEL disc or dual-layer FEL disc. Whatever happens with how it's encoded to disc is up to the content providers and whatever approach they want to take.

Geoff, do you honestly watch in DV when DV is available on UHD, or do you still rather watch in HDR10?
