Dolby Vision is flexible: at the beginning only BT.1866 gamma as base layer, then also HDR10, and now also Hybrid Log Gamma.

I think Dolby is very proud of its Dolby Vision metadata and hence its Dolby Vision display adaptation (i.e. Display Management).
The Dolby Display Management uses Constant-Luminance ICtCp and a Color Appearance Model (CAM) so that it can get a high quality color volume mapping to serve the diversity of HDR TVs.

The SDR layer version is pretty much unused at this point though, those slides are a wee bit outdated. Streaming versions are usually single layer (starting off with HDR and trimming whatever versions they need from that) and as we know the UHD Blu version has been predicated around a HDR10 layer from the outset of that delivery system. Even for TV delivery I think they're looking at a single layer version + metadata which just reverts to PQ10 if the DV metadata can't be read? [Penton citation needed]

As for the "SDR uncompromised" bit, it's interesting to note that when Roma was delivered to Netflix the filmmakers provided a specifically tuned SDR version as well as the HDR deliverable because they were not happy with the look of the downconverted HDR-to-SDR version. According to the American Cinematographer article this is the first time that two such deliverables were provided to Netflix, i.e. it's either SDR to begin with or they just trim whatever other versions they need from the HDR mezzanine files.

Wow. That's quite a damning indictment of dolby vision right there!

Alfonso Cuaron loves him some Dolby Vision, I think it's more that it simply didn't provide the level of finesse that they wanted for all deliverables, bearing in mind that the grading took almost 1000 hours to complete over six months and that this was a deeply personal project for Cuaron. He was his own DP rather than using Chivo as he often does (who said to Cuaron he should do it himself) and so he knew exactly what he wanted to get out of each and every shot in each and every delivery format e.g. theatrical DCI pass (technically SDR), theatrical EDR/home HDR pass, home SDR pass and so on. Each was specifically tuned for its respective format rather than relying on on-the-fly trim passes and that's entirely his prerogative, after all that's how it would work if he were finishing out to theatrical distribution only, rather than going to OTT (Netflix) who have their own set of rules for deliverables.

Did they give you any pics or a DVD of your surgery?, or at least explain to you or your driver what they found and what they did?

For Top Gun: Maverick, Pete don’t need F-14 RIO issues like this – http://www.vfp62.com/f14_rio.html

in fact, for some in Japan, familiarity with SDI architecture makes 12 Gbps transport and new 12 Gbps-capable products more compelling than IP.

What's everyone's take on HDR10+? Will it gain momentum next year? Or will Dolby Vision still be dominant?

Personally have over 50 DV disc titles in my collection. Lionsgate and Paramount will keep the DV ball rolling in 2019.

HDR10+ is just getting their toe in the disc waters. It’s fate likely depends on how much the Fox/Disney merger influences Fox being committed to 10+.
It’s purely speculation by anyone as we don’t have any statements or facts on the merger and what the new Fox will do with the Samsung “deal”.

Chuck Norris ('The Expendables 2') is thee man, period!
Forget Tom Cruise ('Top Gun 2') and his producer ... Jerry Bruckheimer.

It's all about content, always about software first before hardware.
Without software hardware is useless. ...Disney, Sony/Columbia, Universal, Warner Brothers, Paramount, Fox, Lions Gate, Netflix, HBO, Vudu, Hulu, Amazon movie prime, YouTube, iTunes, etc., etc., etc.

Has the DV enhancement layer resolution been explained, what does using 1080p benefit the content, while in top of the 2160p resolution of the base layer?

I was just worried about Ray Liotta and hoped he didn't go back to smoking. Was relieved when I came out of surgery and he was still smoke free.

Yeah, I got pictures like yours of my inner knee. I asked for the HDR versions, but my insurance would only cover SDR.

Your knee locked up? Damn! That's crazy. Probably too much soccer watching. I've read that can happen.

One moment. Must track down old videos, if indeed they even exist, to make point.

I always favored Bruce Lee, especially after I saw his famous “one inch punch”…..

on a news reel with a human volunteer at ~ the 15 sec. timestamp at the tournament in Long Beach -

Without cheating and googling your arse off so as to find some obscure archived article that might reveal the answer, if you can tell me who the Karate Grandmaster is pictured at ~ the 12sec. timestamp speaking into the microphone, then I’ll get you one of these mugs from one of the Top Gun: Maverick locations that imdb doesn’t seem to be aware of – https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...g#post15798829

Oh Lord, not the Venn diagram guy again. To think all that money wasted on tuition for Engineering School to make Venn diagrams on a blog or other social media platforms.
