Since the press is not invited to the workshop next Monday - http://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/0c1418...87b6f2a31e.pdf
Here’s an alternative source in order to keep you journos, (as well as those of you codec cowboys who can’t make it over to Sunnyvale), up to speed –

Start with the video codecs YouTube and from there, then proceed sequentially to the left - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyt...wJWUXr-lesbE6g
Aside from the conversational funkiness tone, it’s educational.

Perhaps now a little more thought provoking and incentivizing -> https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...r#post15900404 given today’s HDMI 2.1 news out of LG.

Seems this will be another example of the hardware getting ahead of the content, just a matter of patience on our part (chomping on the bit, no doubt) waiting on broadcast and OTT to bring us HFR sports and what not for viewing.

You’ve told us HFR movies will arrive, I hope it is better visually than when I saw The Hobbit, as that HFR experience was ‘jerky’ for lack of a better description. Trusting this can be improved.

That's spooky, I rewatched the other video that filmbook did from that session just a couple of days ago.

This, spooky for me, as I never dreamed I would ever see this acknowledgement of an American’s quality during my lifetime - https://www.marketwatch.com/story/ch...ver-2019-01-02 and if Christian proves a success, I may just become a Chelsea supporter. My gut feeling though is that he may be too fragile for the Prem…..I dearly hope I’m wrong.

Has everyone given up on the Prem League thread in the sports section?

Perhaps this past post from before Christmas is now a little more thought provoking and incentivizing -> https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...t#post15897310 given yesterday’s news out of LG regarding their processor and ambient lighting conditions…

“LG’s TVs will offer enhanced picture and sound by analyzing source content as well as optimized content by recognizing ambient conditions.

In addition to content source detection, the new processor finely adjusts the tone mapping curve in accordance with ambient conditions to offer optimized screen brightness, leveraging its ability to understand how the human eye perceives images in different lighting. The processor uses the TV’s ambient light sensor to measure light levels, automatically adjusting brightness to compensate as needed.”

eeColor wanted to do something similar back in the day with their eeColor box that offered the ability to do 3D LUTs but also apply some proprietary changes based on research done by Kodak on color perception in different viewing conditions. Never really took off though.

One of my biggest complaints about PQ is its limitations in calibration when it comes to different viewing environments. By being absolute it doesn't lend itself well to viewing environments that aren't essentially mastering room level. I've had many conversations about this with Stacey Spears. It many ways it can set itself up for the same issues we had with high dynamic range music. People's listening environment (home, car, office) tend to have a higher background noise level (just like most viewing environments) so we saw more and more dynamic range compression built in, hence the LOUDNESS wars. This continues today. I can see a lot of the same arguments and complaints happening with HDR (too dim, I want it bright).

Yep, and speaking purely for the average Joe, when people are used to watching SDR in Torch Mode on their TVs with lots of ambient light beaming down upon it then HDR and its fixed ceiling of brightness - particularly APL - is going to look very dim in comparison. But as much as LG can talk a good game, I've never seen an ambient light adjusting mode from any manufacturer that was worth a damn.

PS

Please ask Stacey when Spears & Munsil 3rd edition UHD is due. Ta.
