I’m losing the sequence of the past posts as to quote whoever. Anyway, somebody on some page back there asked about deliverables. Using Davinci Resolve these were created -

for the doc - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8999864/

The point is/was to show that once the filmmaker has decided to go HDR, instead of doing individual grades from scratch for each intended deliverable, the fact that Dolby Vision allows you to essentially grade once and then, by ticking a different menu choice and doing a trim (which doesn’t take long), deliver many iterations that will theoretically translate acceptably to various devices (smartphones, iPads, SDR tvs, HDR consumer TVs that are not reference monitors).

The default target value is 400 in Transkoder, when you create the HDR10+ metadata. I had initially made it 1000, but then I was asked to lower it to 500 by those working on HDR10+.
Also when in Davinci Resolve, as soon as you select in project settings the HDR10+ box, a 400 – 500 nits cap is instituted.

So what does the 1500 nit/D65 calibrated consumer display do when content is from a 1000 nit iteration?

Does the extra 500 nit peak brightness get waisted or does it have to tone map to 1500 nits?

If it is properly calibrated for PQ it just does nit for nit to the peak 1000 nit grade. Just like if you watched a movie that only has a max value of 100, 500, or any other number below your peak 1500 nits.

People need to understand that just because a movie is graded on a display that is 1000, 4000 or even 10000 nits does not mean they use all the brightness. Just like you can grade a black and white movie on a color monitor.

Dave Vaughn, JohnAV, etc. Nor-Calers, here’s a worthwhile conference for you in your neck of the woods –
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/enterta...chautocomplete

if I was there, I’d attend the discussion ‘2K, 4K, 8K Hike! Or Hype’, a speaker being the President and CEO of MovieLabs, I would hope Jim Helman turns up too since they’re talking tech and he's the CTO

Dave, John you can also take in the complementary screening of Dark Phoenix here - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...q#post15158468

well, not in the lobby of course, but on a different floor

in reference to the exclusive heads-up from Feb. 6, before filming began - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...w#post16055574

with an even earlier hint on Feb. 2 having the ‘7’ of 71 ( USS Theodore Roosevelt) purposely cropped off so as not to reveal too much as to which carrier - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...r#post16043346

Now, this month, a follow-up article by Amy Bushatz on May 23 from military.com - https://www.military.com/daily-news/...s-onboard.html
