Kind of funny, looking back. I remember back in 2014, when if you red the posts/articles not just on AVS, but many other outside threads/forums and especially the mainstream video guru/reporter websites that consumers tend to gravitate to for info and then bring it onto the forums for discussion, for some reason, most hobbyists and AV blogger/journalists types preferred using the term h.265 back then.

Now it’s all HEVC this, HEVC that.

Finally.

As an addendum to thee above ^ with regards to standards organizations’ work on a professional level, I’m disappointed to inform readers that the ad hoc (11) group’s (mandated for one thing to study content characteristics and identify appropriate test sequences for HDR/WCG visual testing) efforts to secure availability of a consumer HDR display (e.g., a Samsung JS or KS9500, etc. or LG OLED) for the Geneva meeting currently in progress now, have not met with success to date. AHG11 views it as critical to assess the target market performance of coding methodologies on displays that are most likely to be used by consumers for viewing HDR content.

One, but they all tend to be tough nuts to crack. I’m giving it another try this weekend.

I just hope Putin’s pals don’t hack NAB next. At the minimum, we’d have to change the name from NAB to RNAB.

How credible is this site?

Quote:
However the good news is that the TV manufacturers should be able to upgrade the HDMI 2.0a connections on their TVs to HDMI 2.1 if they so wish. It's still early days and how much support there will be for HDR 10 with dynamic metadata will largely depend on how successful Dolby are in promoting their version of HDR

Well, Samsung has been working on dynamic HDR10 and have said that their TVs, starting with the 2016 models, will be firmware updated to support it. So I'm not worried about that.

This article suggests that upgrading to HDMI 2.1 via firmware update is possible, which is interesting.

But not all HDR pass-through chipsets can handle the greater than 18 Gbps bandwidth if the industry moves that way.

And I have a 2015 Samsung 4k TV with similar HDMI chips to their 2016 models yet I'm left out in the cold apparently.

The ATSC 3.0 candidate standard for video was recently updated with sections on HDR and it supports both HLG and PQ.

Good news on ATSC 3.0.
Richard, this -> https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...-samsung-s-lee dominated water cooler conversation today.

Default Atcs 3.0: Pq/hlg hdr, hfr

http://atsc.org/standards/candidate-standards/
ATSC 3.0 will likely support PQ or HLG:

"The video transfer characteristics shall be signaled as one of the following: SDR, PQ, or HLG as specified in Sections 6.3.2.1, 6.3.2.2, and 6.3.2.3, respectively."
http://atsc.org/wp-content/uploads/2...Video-HEVC.pdf

Concerning PQ, ATSC 3.0 will likely support HDR10 without static metadata, or HDR10:

"The bitstream may contain SEI messages with payloadType value equal to 137. This allows for the optional transmission of the Mastering Display Color Volume SEI message. It is not mandatory to transmit the Mastering Display Color Volume SEI message.
The bitstream may contain SEI messages with payloadType value equal to 144. This allows for the optional transmission of the Content Light Level Information SEI message. It is not mandatory to transmit the Content Light Level Information SEI message.
For more information regarding Mastering Display Color Volume metadata see SMPTE ST 2086 [21]. For more information regarding Content Light Level Information metadata (MaxFALL and MaxCLL) see CTA-861-G [22] Annex P."

ATSC 3.0 will likely support HFR 120 fps (HEVC Level 5.2) or current HDR frame rate (HEVC Level 5.1: up to 60 fps):

"HEVC encoded ATSC 3.0 Progressive Video shall comply with the following constraints:
• The bitstream shall conform to HEVC Main 10 Profile or HEVC Scalable Main 10 Profile, Main Tier, Level 5.2. Note that when a bitstream is indicated to conform to a level that is lower than Level 5.2, it is also considered as conforming to Level 5.2.
• The color subsampling shall be 4:2:0."

An ATSC 3.0-compliant TV should have:
. a capable (i.e. powerful enough) TV System-on-Chip, likely with 10-bit HEVC Main 10 Level 5.1 hardware decoding or with 10-bit HEVC Main 10 Level 5.2 hardware decoding, for HDR processing / display adaptation
. an ATSC 3.0 physical layer chip for broadcast reception.

Will definitely check it out. Would be interesting to hear the benefits and advantages of both methods.

Default DVB UHD Phase 2: PQ/HLG HDR, HFR

As far as I understand, the video parts of ATSC 3.0 (candidate standard) and DVB UHD Phase 2 are basically the same, i.e. PQ/HLG HDR, HFR.
https://www.dvb.org/standards#standardgroup_24

PQ10 + optional static metadata = "HDR10"

A DVB UHD Phase 2-compliant TV should have:
. a capable (i.e. powerful enough) TV System-on-Chip, likely with 10-bit HEVC hardware decoding (up to 60 fps) or with 10-bit HEVC Main 10 Level 5.2 hardware decoding (up to 120 fps), for HDR processing / display adaptation
. a DVB T2 / S2 physical layer chip for broadcast reception.

The HEVC bitstreams of DVB UHD Phase 2 / ATSC 3.0 can also be delivered over IP networks.
