IHS: Domestic 4K UHD TV Shipments Surge Due to Pending Chinese Tariffs

Sales and shipments of 4K UHD televisions has hit 60% market penetration in some parts of the world, including the United States, according to new data from IHS Markit.

Speaking Oct. 14 at the MIPCOM confab in Cannes, France, Paul Gray, research analysis director at the London-based IHS, said 4K UHD TVs now exceed more than half of all TV shipments worldwide.

The analyst contends there are more than 260 million 4K UHD households globally — a tally that is expected to reach 574 million households by 2023, according to Advanced-Television.com, which reported Gray’s comments from France. About 34% of North American homes have 4KUHD TVs, increasing to 64% in the next four years.

Notably, domestic shipments of 4K UHD TVs surged in North America as distributors stockpile inventory ahead of any proposed tariff increases on Chinese-manufactured products by the Trump Administration.

Meanwhile, next-generation 8K resolution continues to grow slowly with 167,000 display units shipped in 2019. This is expected to reach 3 million units by 2023.

^ -> There’s a four part documentary series Unnatural Selection launching Oct.18 on Netflix. It's also the first time that a title has been graded in Dolby Vision HDR by a production company and delivered to Netflix.

Am I being slow here - surely there's lots of existing Dolby Vision content on Netflix already? Or are you saying that the only Dolby Vision content on Netflix is home-produced Netflix content (including the movies)?

Sorry, Penton, I'm with MrTickle. There's plenty of documentary content in DV on Netflix as well. Could you be more specific on why it's a first?

To be more specific, I’m of the understanding, based upon what was relayed by the VP in charge, that the past doc material to which you refer was all graded inhouse (Netflix) as opposed to the Dolby Vision master coming from a production company (https://www.radleystudios.tv/case-st...ural-selection) and delivered to Netflix for distribution.

P.S.
b.t.w., for full transparency, I have family ties with the Broad Institute (https://www.broadinstitute.org/resea...hlights-crispr) and believe in its medical ethics as well as the scientific claims and filings it has made to the Patent Office over the many years

Not sure, but I think Films at 59 did Our Planet's DV: https://www.definitionmagazine.com/j...ing-our-planet

Quote:
Our Planet was Films at 59’s first Netflix-delivered show but of course also Netflix’s first natural history show, so the pressure was huge to make it look incredible – especially as this was a new genre for the streaming giant. George Panayiotou says, “We’ve been delivering UHD projects for a while; our first HDR delivery was Planet Earth 2 which was three or four years ago for BBC Worldwide. That was a different flavour of HDR; it was HLG as it was for worldwide requirements. Following that we also delivered Blue Planet 2 and Dynasties as HDR programmes, but this was our first Netflix and Dolby Vision HDR delivery.” But George stresses that the company was very well prepared for working with Netflix as it had invested very heavily in infrastructure “from a storage point of view, as well as HDR monitoring grading kit and online kit to be able to deliver the programmes

Well to give the Netflix post manager the benefit of the doubt, despite the release dates of each, perhaps Netflix received the Unnatural Selection Dolby Vision IMF master before that of Our Planet? Otherwise, what can I say, if you can’t trust the communication from a post production manger, who can you trust?

Nevertheless…….
this sort of thing to a far worse degree has happened before with the man-in-charge at another Hollywood studio, namely Sony Pictures e.g. – “we have discussed NOTLD at the studio and are able to verify via [Sony Pictures Entertainment]’s Mastering Department, that our Blu-ray is indeed the approved transfer from 2010, generated for the film’s 20th anniversary, and done in consultation with the film’s director of photography.” - http://cinemalowdown.com/2012/11/cin...exclusive.html

b.t.w., I hope that the above discussion with puddy77 regarding the grading of Unnatural Selection doesn’t distract folks from the key point in that CRISPR and other gene editing approaches can be of HUGE importance to society…..worldwide and may be something worthwhile to learn about even if one is not an investor - https://www.fool.com/investing/2019/...e-as-much.aspx

nevertheless, I think members of the cast of Top Gun: Maverick also show good taste in non-cinematic content behind the scenes –

Penton, you think Top Gun: Maverick is a billion-dollar flick @ the box office (worldwide)?

Look @ Ang Lee's Gemini Man with all the tricks of the film book; high frame rate (HFR - 120fps) and HDR and 3D IMAX technology ... it's under performing.
On the other hand Joker is collecting all the gold reserve from Fort Knox.

Did you hear Martin Scorsese saying that all Marvel films are not real films (cinema)?
I trust the guy in this film artistic business. Plus Hollywood wouldn't support The Irishman? That's why he went to Netflix to get it made. I don't see Scorsese make a comic book film (Marvel or DC), ever.

Ang Lee cannot make more artistic (technological) films in Hollywood without being financially productive. So what is he going to do next...a comic book flick in 3D? ...And with an attractive emphasis for the Chinese audience?

If he can do 3D in HDR, that might catch up with the film industry? It could resurrect the Cinema world as we know it ... without shades?
3D in 8K HDR Dolby Vision? ...And a film about Love and Glory...from say a very poor district of Brazil...a young couple in love with music and dance ... Samba? And they end up in the Carnival?
