It's revealing (and all the more curious) that both the Pioneer and Panasonic have the exact same issue with their Dolby Vision outputs.
Wasn't lying, was I?

Whither the Ultra HD Blu-ray player category in 2020? CES gave us disturbingly little in the way of new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray hardware or software announcements for the year ahead.

The show traditionally has been the launching pad for the new year’s player models, but none were to be found this time out. Manufacturers said they had nothing to show at this time, meaning players could be coming later in the year, or, as in one manufacturer’s case, the prior year’s models are at least for now being carried over without a model refresh.

Gone was the boasting of the superior transfer rates, picture and sound quality, multi-disc format compatibility and built-in streaming platforms of the latest physical media players, which had been a part of shows to varying degrees in the past five years.

What else they can add to a player in order for a model refresh? I can only think of frame-adapt HDR and Dolby Vision IQ but Panasonic is implementing those to their HZ2000 OLEDs coming in September.

dafuq would a player be able to do Dolby IQ anyway? Have its own light sensor built in?

Hisense To Stop Making OLED TVs After Just 1 Year

The company’s decision was first revealed by PC World, which said Hisense will not be releasing a successor to last year’s O8B OLED TV.

Rather, this year Hisense is laser-focused on its ULED-XD TVs, which are made up of two LCD panels fused together. The inner panel is a monochrome FHD LCD that serves the purpose of blocking light on images with low brightness, while the outer panel is a 4K full colour LCD. This fusion of two panels allows Hisense to create a much larger number of local dimming zones compared to traditional LCD TVs, making its ULED-XD TVs comparable with OLEDs, only at a much more affordable price. An early prototype of Hisense’s ULED-XD panels achieved over 2,900 nits of brightness for example, while delivering almost perfect contrast.

“We are currently focused on making ULED XD successful due to its strong PQ performance and value proposition vs OLED,” the company told Techradar in a statement last week.

Hisense, which launched its OLED TVs in the U.K. and Australia, has now reportedly abandoned its plans to sell them in the U.S.

I wonder if they will have heating issues with this approach with the LEDs blasting out around 3,000 nits before passing through the panel layers.

I hope we can find out from some qualifying reviewers if these dual panels and the mini-LED panels have the capabilities to rival OLEDs for consumer appreciation, as long as the store prices are still LED competitive.

While I agree that big features may be difficult, I think there is room for improvement with new models for sure. The Panasonic models are tedious to use in a lot of ways (even a firmware update giving some improvements would be nice) and they have room to grow in their tone mapping. I also could see a player between the 820 and 9000 that offered better build and remote than the 820 but without quite the focus on analog audio of the 9000. Get rid of some of the annoyances, make it faster to operate on the day to day and provide a source direct mode.

I'm actually surprised that more manufacturers haven't stepped up to try and fill the gap left by Oppo. Sure there are some great disc spinners out there, but nothing has come close to the advanced features the Oppo offered yet.

Yeah but OPPO left the spinner market for a reason, they just weren't making enough money and that's not exactly a siren song that's going to entice other manufacturers to make their own high end players for equal or higher amounts.

As for the Panny, it's got a few quirks but the 820 is quick, quiet and reliable, and I bought a proper remote for 15 quid so now I don't need to spend a theoretical £500 on a mid-range player just to get the better remote. They're awful at playing files but then that's never, ever been Panasonic's strongest suit with their players, though I do wish that the video processing would be updated with more bit depth because the mild banding that's introduced via the Optimiser is a bit of a niggle. That can't be done with firmware though, it needs the next generation of HCX processing and as we're four years in it's due an upgrade.

Sony too could have stepped up to the plate, with a solid player (Oppo style) as they can support SACD and DVD Audio...like Pioneer. It's going to take some time to get used to Oppo's exit ... one player (203) for the masses and built like a tank, and the other player (205) the King of the audio/video universe.

Panasonic cannot compete, Sony I don't know what's happening with their Elevated Standard (ES), Pioneer is nice but not competitive for the masses.

A player that can do HDR up and down in top shape and adjusts to any display is today's where we're @
The perfect player (Oppo) is no more; it just cannot be replaced...ever. IMO

Hold on real tight to your 203 and 205 if you're up into high caliber video and audio performance; they are worth their gold standard till the day they die...which means till the end of times, or the end of their owners...whichever comes first.

This is a new world we're living in today...America, China and all that manufacturing jazz.
We had it real good for many years with Oppo; the good times are gone, the best is yet to come ...

4K HDR Blu-ray discs are the best we have, the 4K HDR players have to support them the best they can...affordably and with unparralel performance, and durability/reliability/firmware upgrade support.
