For those who may have missed my heads-up last month to register for the live webinar and ask questions at the time, here is the playback -
also, not mentioned, but something to add to the statements about the LG C9 at the 23:00 timestamp is that that monitor is challenged by auto-dimming for the Dolby Vision vs. HDR10 crowd, there is a chart comparing both (metadata values, etc.) at the 40:00 timestamp there are a few questions/answers interposed during the main presentation with the dedicated Q&A beginning in earnest at 1:02:07 |

Could you explain why the new Dolby Vision 4.0 metadata are "especially useful for when the consumer owner has a not so great HDR TV"?
Thanks |

I find it very disengenius for them to say that Dolby Vision is "typically 12bit" - this was repeated over and over - when the reality is that only 4k Blu-ray still supports 12bit, and that's only if the creator goes against Dolby recommendations and uses a FEL. Dolby seems hell-bent on going MEL-only on discs "to improve compatibility". Also, removing support for FEL from Profile 4, and pushing people towards the 10bit-only Profile 5. On streaming, 12bit is impossible. The entire "direction of travel" is away from 12bit, towards 10bit-only Dolby Vision and this is a great shame. It's just dishonest of them to claim that Dolby Vision is "typically 12bit". |

Don't think this has been posted yet, but beginning Wednesday, April 13th the NAB will host this annual TV and Radio Broadcasters convention via webcasting. This is the first time in my 34 consecutive years of attending and speaking at NAB that I participate in the session virtually from my home desktop computer.
Here's the link to the sessions and I am confident many Blu-ray.com members will enjoy many of the very informative and educational sessions. I've signed up for several of the ATSC 3.0, VR, 8K, FHD/HDR, UHD/HDR and filmmaking sessions. This is a technical trade convention, but this is the first year it's open to the public and all at no cost. |

Last week, I did offer a selective heads-up to one session - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...t#post17612443 also, as the absence of sports due to the current pandemic has been painfully evident for fans, watching professional sports plays a significant role in a lot of people’s entertainment/lives so, cutting edge experience gained and passed on by Michael and Chris to help others with hopefully more live-linear HDR productions - https://dir.nabshowexpress.com/8_0/s...cheduleid=1243 |

I just watched the NAB Show Express portion on HDR broadcasts. It appears for the foreseeable future HDR live broadcasts will be limited to 1080p. From what was shown at the average viewing distance of nine feet from a 65" TV it is impossible to see 4K resolution however HDR makes a big impact (so 8K in a living room would not be beneficial at all). The reason for not using 4K for live sports is at 4K 60p there is increased motion blur. So broadcasters see no reason for 4K but viewers will benefit from HDR. Ultimately broadcasters may switch to HLG but for compatibility they will use HDR10.
