When did Samsung and good business sense really ever go together?

Samsung owns 31.9% of the worldwide TV market: #1. They also own 90% of the OLED for Smart Phones world wide market. I would call those stats good business.

Actually we don't.

Not to mention it really doesn't offer any benefit over the competition. It's really Samsung's attempt to avoid licensing costs at the same time collecting their own licensing (the "free" isn't true) and having their competitors share IP - which is a huge reason why Sony and LG will never support it.
And it's doubly ironic they're trying to build off of HDR10 - which Dolby released as an open standard.

I don't have time to look around this thread to see what has already been put up. But I saw this video on HDR10+:

I got this video from an article via GSMarena talking about Samsung's adaptive HDR10+.

Also, I saw this video from Engadget from 2019 that explained everything about HDR (including what it is, what kind of HDR standard including HLG, etc...):

Not sure if anyone on this thread ever posted the Engadget video. But I thought it was very vital and well understandable (depend on how much of a nerd you are)

Should put us upwards of 175,000 views for the month of December.
^ No joy as to Bob’s accounting presence/prowess? Too much celebrating on Vancouver Island I presume . Well then I figure we likely slotted in somewhere close (+ or –) to 200,000 views for this thread for the month of December as we’re now over 8 million views total. Just think Noremac another 6 – 7 hundred thousand views and we’ll surpass the gold standard - https://forum.blu-ray.com/forumdisplay.php?f=61 .

I don't know how familiar you are with wrestling, but I essentially see Netflix as the WCW of the streaming world.

For reasons like being forced to produced it's own content has them seeking out all talent that draws the most. That talent will take them for everything they've got, due to Netflix being in less of a position to turn down their projects Hollywood has the flexibility to rejected, but Netflix risks losing that talent.

Hence how Clooney ends up getting to make The Midnight Sky, and we are left watching it wondering why it even exists. It exists because Netflix honestly believes it's long term future isn't safe in just being a subscription streaming service, otherwise they wouldn’t be throwing everything and the kitchen sink at trying to become a major studio. But the chances of them ever being is zero, because, for the reason i explained above, they will never secure a production that will turn a profit. Just forever chasing something that will maintain their subscription base, till the bottom crashes out.

And then someone will get a nice little bargain buying up the Netflix catalogue.

Don't see a post from LOTR (Bob) but as of now the readership views on this thread exceed 8 Million at 8,009,829. Pretty nifty.

Thanks to all contributors (espc. P-M of course) and readers for pushing HDR interest even in the era of the pandemic.

What are some good, dependable HDMI cables for a 4K player that are reasonably priced?

2021 no HDR tracking views for me. I'll track other stuff instead...movies @ the theaters, Corona vaccines, stimulus of the finances and brain, tracking my own sanity, ...things like that...to keep healthy and safe.

By the way, in 2021 this HDR thread will remain solid, so is the Criterion Collection thread.
We are going to see more catalog flicks get the 4K HDR treatment.

* As for Netflix, it's not going anywhere but up.

Upcoming high-end HDR TV should have the features "for better reproduction of a creator’s intent" of the existing Eizo CG319X HDR monitor: panel uniformity control, 3D LUT color correction, automated calibration, pattern generator, colorimeter, calibration software.

"Encouragement" is fine but I hope they don't start demanding a certain level of HDR performance because it will turn filmmakers away as much as they're attracting them right now. Still, Vincent and the other "fake HDR" yahoos will be pleased.

unlikely, because all things considered, the carrot works better than the stick approach, and if only for the paucity of “the Rolls Royce”- - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tDoWwSM-f8#16m38s , and currently there being so few high nit HDR grading monitors out in the wild, as so - https://twitter.com/joeydanna/status...56733922672641

like with COVID-19 vaccines, we’ve got to get more of these into peoples’ arms/color bays
