That would be your opinion. None of Samsung's 8K TVs support DV yet they are selling. Maybe it's a case of over-valuing Dolby Vision. Yep - that's it.

This is true. However, I'd be surprised if their high end units did as well as other brands like Sony and LG. Maybe I'm wrong. I just can't imagine doing all the research, spending a bunch of money and settling for Samsung..

"Samsung leads the industry in revenue share for Advanced TV, as shown in the next chart here, but Samsung’s revenue share has fallen by 13% after peaking at 55% in Q1 2020. LG and TCL, among others, gained revenue share at Samsung’s expense; LG share increased to 28% in Q1 2021, up 7% from a year ago, while TCL share increased to 6% in Q1 2021, doubling its share from the prior year, and closely trailing Sony at 7% for the #3 spot."
https://www.displaysupplychain.com/b...ket-in-q1-2021 ![]() Anyway, by supporting Dolby Vision, the big streaming providers are logically targeting the biggest market share of premium TVs provided by the TV makers with the exception of Samsung. QD-OLED is an advantage for Samsung. The non-support of Dolby Vision isn't an advantage for Samsung. And it’s easy to fix it, by adding a piece of HDR software. This upgraded Samsung TV will remain the same: same panel, same electronic parts, same mechanical parts! And the royalty cost to add Dolby Vision ranges from less than $3 per TV to lower than $2 per TV. https://www.avsforum.com/threads/uni...#post-47830961 |

Most of those sales aren't always to people who study up on these things. I'm willing to bet they have lost sales to the more tech-savvy crowd. |

Wonder if they have the DTS guys running their R&D department too? Wait for Dolby to innovate something and then come out with their own version several months later. |

The reason why Samsung has avoided Dolby Vision is because of their license and royalties fees. That was the driving force behind HDR10+.

There's no fee for content providers to use the 10+ system, just the hardware providers, vs the $2500 it costs for a yearly Dolby Vision license to activate the full version (as a basic automated analysis version of DV is included for free with some versions of DaVinci Resolve) but unless you're literally a home-brew outfit then that cost is peanuts. There are few grading houses of note without DV, particularly because some services like Netflix literally insist upon it. |

So for Dolby Vision you pay a $2500 yearly license fee AND you also pay $2-$3 per TV royaltie's fee.
Sell 50 million DV HDR 4K TVs - you pay Dolby $100 million in royalties. Or is there a point when either the royalty fee scales down or no longer applies? |
