The films were cropped from 2.35:1 to 2.39:1. Why they did it is a mystery.

It's less evident with the original trilogy as they're framed and geometrically slightly different, but the prequels just have a few more pixels of letterbox as they go from 2.35:1 to 2.40:1.

Eh, they prolly did it to cover the ringing where the action area meets the letterbox bars.

If the old prequel Blu-rays didn’t have the ringing, why would it appear on the new transfers and need to be cropped? That’s what confuses me.

I've now read elsewhere that some people who have ordered the new blus from HMV and Amazon have received the 2011 masters in 2020 packaging. Just wondering if anyone here has had this experience?

I reckon the upscale for UHD might've caused some ringing and they cinched in the letterbox bars to block it out...but this should technically only apply to the UHD and not the BD, as I'm sure people's big brains have worked out, unless the BD is actually a downscale of the upscale (!). Note that the new prequel BDs also have the same weird (albeit totally unnoticeable in motion) stretching at the edges of the frame that the UHDs do, unlike the old BDs.

On those I believe that they did it to "hide" the ringing on the sides. The shots where the edges are stretched match the ones that had the ringing artifacts.

I don't understand, they were putting the 2011 discs (with same 2011 artwork) in the new 2020 cases? Or the 2011 discs with 2020 disc artwork (like with crouching tiger hidden dragon)?

I think the confusion stems from the multi-screen edition from 2019 sharing the same artwork with the 2020 releases. Only the latter have the new masters. But the multi-screen editions were only released in the US, not the UK.

I've been posting on the Original Trilogy forum as well as on here and am now utterly confused. The initial impression I got was that 2019 discs were being shipped in 2020 packaging, but now the implication seems to be that retailers have been sending the 2019 release, i.e. discs and packaging, to people who have ordered the 2020 version.

But how does that work, because I didn't think the 2020 BD-only versions had been released in the US, and the 2019 versions weren't released in the UK? So how can UK retailers be shipping the US versions, or vice versa?

I think I need to lay down in a darkened room.

The UK singles from this August have the new masters. If someone received those with the old discs then someone has tampered with it. Maybe it was a returned item and sold as new, or someone ordered the US multi-screen edition by mistake.

But who actually got the new editions with old discs? Was it a single person? Many? Was it hearsay?

From what I can gather someone adywan knows had the wrong versions in HMV:

The packaging is identical too so there’s no way of knowing which version you will get even if you go into a shop and check the covers. So now he is stuck with 2 versions of ROTJ and no way of knowing if he buys another copy if it will be the new version or not. Until all the old stock of the September 2019 releases are sold, its a risk buying them as separates.
Pretty confusing, as we didn't have any 2019 releases, it's been five years since we did, with the Steelbook releases and re-issued Saga set.

HMV are pretty decent as well, if you get the wrong disc inside, I can't imagine them not exchanging in. They'll literally let you open stuff in store to see the contents are correct in some cases. I've returned stuff because the disc wasn't anamorphic.

Like you said September, 2019, stock would imply the Multi-Screen releases from the US.

So they actually got 2011 discs with the old 2011 disc artwork? The bonus discs are new so they are mixing 2011 film discs with 2020 bonus discs?

I checked my prequel and original trilogies from Amazon. I got them last week and they have 2020 on all the discs including ROTJ. I have only played Phantom Menace so far.

I assume there is not a problem ordering the new "Rey" trilogy discs, not counting the problem of sending the old ROS out. I intend to look out for them in a supermarket before the offer ends.

The US releases from last year with the old masters have the same artwork as the new releases, not Obi-Wan, Chewbacca and Darth VADER like the 2011 releases.

I'm not sure what they got, whether it was just the wrong sets or right case wrong discs.

This is getting confusing. There is talk of 2011 discs but problem is with 2019 discs. So they have the new artwork with 2011 on the bottom of the discs or 2019? And somehow US discs ended up in the new UK sets?

Honestly I wouldn't worry about getting the wrong discs, we don't have enough context.

All the UK discs with the new masters are 2020. There aren't any discs with the new artwork and ©2011, they'd say ©2019 and Buena Vista on them. Why Disney decided to reuse the artwork a few months later is beyond me.

You'd have to go out of your way to buy the 2019 US Multi Screen releases by mistake if you're in the UK.

Yep, I'm starting to have the same thought.

Seems like it's about 2011 discs appearing in 2020 packaging as I can't see how the US 2019 discs would end up being sold by UK retailers.

As you say though, doesn't seem like any people on this forum have had any problems at all.
