Watched a bit in HMV today - Horrible !! T.E.S.B when Chewbacca and Leia are on Cloud Car City after the carbon Freeze, looked like a cheap music video they were running 'outlined' and they looked real, but in a studio with the background looking like it was painted and put there afterwards.

It was all Sony in HMV and a good set up.

What a shame, I had a heavy heart thinking of a generation only knowing the original triology on BR and such poor quality. Looked better watching it on Boxing day ITV 1992 !!

I disagree. I don't think that's a fair analysis, when you take into account the age of the film overall and the inherent limitations. Based on those factors, I think the OT looks pretty fantastic, better than the PT in terms of expectations, but of course RotS is the best-looking SW film overall.

Disagree, I have watched these on DVD on an upscaling panasonic and think they look better. Better tones and no one looks like they were cut out and pasted onto scenery.

I have films around the same age/early eighties, with lower budgets like Phenomena, Dawn of the Dead and they look like they were made last week. Mint. Alien, Aliens and Blade Runner, I've read have awesome PQ.

This is STAR WARS, with a bottomless supply of restoration and tech.... They look naff. They look like a wasted opportunity. It is sad, these are massive films and £70 box set. Yeah the odd scene looks great... but some scenes look pants.... it really shouldn't be accepted because they are old.

These were the films everyone was waiting for ....

The problem is the DVD's even with their inherent problems were some of the best looking titles (the original trilogy) on that format. The Blu's don't seem to be of comparative quality.

They really needed new transfers from new masters, which makes having the original theatrical editions been released unlikely because if they're treated properly they would surpass George Lucas' revised editions in the video quality department.

Well, I have seen the DVDs, and IMO, the Blu's come out on top. Nothing's going to changbe for a while until the Ultimate Blu-ray Edition whenever that'll come out. I am more than satisfied with the Blus, and think they at least fulfill, if not exceed expectations.

I'm still waiting for the Blu's to come down in price before I make the HD leap and I haven't had the nerve to put my DVD's in my BD player because I hold them in such high revere. I tried Raiders a while back and it looked horrible.

From what I've seen I would say the Blu's are slightly superior to the DVD's. But I still think the DVD's pushed DVD quality to the limit while the Blu's haven't. Although Revenge of the Sith seems to have had very high praise.

No one with working eyeballs should be in agreement with that, especially not based on an HMV display, most like on torch mode.

The BDs have their issues, but saying the DVDs look better, that's poppycock, old bean!

I'd say go with your favourite series out of the two. The SW BDs have some flaws, but IMO overall the good outweigh the bad, excellent picture overall, flawless sound. The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions, same really, although less flaws than the SW ones.

Thanks for the info.

I just dont know how bad the green tint is on the Lord of the Rings Trilogy...

I've seen numerous people complaining about it, but I guess that is for another thread.

Star Wars is looking good.

I'm worried my set might be faulty, I watched ROTS last night and many scenes had vertical white lines in them.

Watching ROTJ and am having the same problem, absolutely gutted!!

I have never had this problem with any blu rays before, and I tested both discs with two different players and tvs. Anyone any ideas what might be the problem?

Some guys are reporting the same thing in the US thread. I'd wait a while in case there's official word from Lucasfilm Ltd. I'm not sure if it's a problem that can be cured with an update though.

Knowing Lucasfilm they'll say our TV's need to be THX calibrated....

Unpopular edits, bad colour balance, vertical lines.

Lucas and Fox really failed on this release.

Which will prehap's help them sell another bout of films; for the SW-fans, I do hope whats his face doesn't die soon in a horrific accident.

I refuse to watch these bastardized versions.

I got these as soon as they came out. Picture is brilliant, audio is superb and there's a silly amount of bonus features. So what if Vader says no a couple of times?

Lucas said: I'm sorry some people out there fell in love with my unfinished work (Original Trilogy)

you gotta give it to this guy for having the balls to modify HIS film based on what he likes

most other studios/directors would have sold out to 'fans'
