So glad they haven't released 3D Phantom Menace. Whilst the pod race would be awesome, feeling like ducking everytime Jar Jar moved his head because of those floppy ears would be very annoying

Haha :P

I was quite disappointed with the 3D In the phantom menace it was so subtle that you could barely notice it was there, kind of defeated the point of it.

I have to say, as great as it is to see the movies in high definition, the 97 special edition effects stand out like a sore thumb, especially in Mos Eisley. C3PO's quip: "I don't like the look of this," couldn't have been more appropriate. Also the "Nooo!" which actually comes about three seconds before Vader moves on the Emperor, which surely Palp would've heard? Logic breaking additions, it's madness, the digital rocks in Tatooine are terrible too. Ruins the composition of the original shot and when we cut to a wide, the digital rocks are gone! They're literally creating new continuity errors as they go along. Who makes these decisions?

Unfortunately, to see the original cuts in HD it would cost them a lot of money as I understand the 97 prints are the masters really, so to clean everything up to look great on Blu-ray is something I never see being done. Then there's that grey area...if they did do it, do they leave everything exactly as it is? Or clean up some of the matte lines? Fix the lightsabers?

To me it's just starting to grate on my viewing experience. Might have to start turning to fan efforts to present the films as originally as possible, but even then things have been changed. The woes and first world problems of Star Wars purists eh!
Still hoping Disney release the theatrical cuts. Considering how the "Despecialized" cuts were put together, the "impossible to restore" arguments seem a bit moot...

Well I'm assuming you're not quoting me, as it's totally possible, it's just whether Disney would put the money behind going back and starting from scratch for new transfers/cleaning up all over again. Can't see it happening. Do you recommend the "Despecialized" editions then? Haven't looked into them too much.

And Han didn't shoot first. He was the only one who shot, period

It's entirely possible Disney might not be interested in doing a set of the unaltered trilogy, but it's nonsense to suggest that if they were they'd balk at the expense. They wouldn't cost any more than any other big restoration project all of the studios have undertaken many times over the last few years, and the release of the original unaltered trilogy in cinemas and on Blu-ray would be huge. There are plenty of Star Wars fans who'd consider it a bigger deal than Episode VII! Disney would recoup their costs no problem.

They are alright, but they're only 720p.

I think it would be a combination of interest and expense that will prevent us from seeing them. They may be interested but what's going to be worth putting money behind, a new show like Rebels or the new movies which will no doubt be gargantuan, or paying a lot of money to restore the original prints plus touching up etc? Obviously they could afford both easily, but I think they're more concerned with new content. Weren't all the 3D conversions shelved just after Disney took over? Maybe in the next 10 years or so, but for now I can only see it being about the new trilogy. As much money as Disney have, I still think they're gonna handle it smartly.

A massive amount of work went into them, colour correction, compositing of sources etc.

Man I grew up watching these recorded from TV onto VHS, so 720p is absolutely fine for now

But yeah they do look pretty good.

It's against the rules to discuss where to download rips/edits etc.

In Amazon's Black Friday taster thingy - £33.99.

Not sure whether to finally get this, or wait until Empire of Dreams is included in any future release

This post is from ages ago, but I can't be bothered with this at the moment: I don't really care for 1-3, so will wait for better. A long wait, guaranteed - but I've too much to watch at the moment anyway!

I saw the set in Morrisons earlier this week for £40 and was tempted. I've just ordered it from Amazon. Thanks for the information.

I like the way Amazon give you the option of buying at full price even when there are some available at the discount price

I caved and ordered: when I went to checkout it said I had 14 minutes to get the deal at the lightning price!

It ends in 2 hrs 30m - or sells out
