I far prefer the packaging on the UK release. It looks like it will protect the bds much better.

Have a look at Amazon's deal page throughout the week, you'll probably find it goes back up again...

This.

Same discs different packaging just like the steelbook re-releases. I do wonder when we will see a new re-release of the old saga though. Not holding my breath, probably won't be until the end of the current trilogy.

On that note, what will the trilogy be known as after episode 9? We had the Original Trilogy, Prequel Trilogy and now a Sequel Trilogy(?) What will they call 4th Trilogy!

Prefer the Tatooine packaging myself. I know it's meant to be Anakin/Vader's story but Vader only appears in 4 films, and only substantially in 3 of them.

Wasn't there talk a while ago about the original theatrical cuts being released on BD?

That's all there's ever been for the UOT

Closest we've had in modern times was the limited edition DVD releases of the Special Editions that had the old Laser Disc version as a bonus DVD.

Surely adding the original versions in good quality is the only way they can sucker buyers into purchasing a complete boxset again?

Mind, even then the LD editions were an amalgam of the best sources at the time.

Why go the expense of remastering the original cuts (or even just the scenes with changes) when you can rehash the same discs and pull a new packaging type out of the hat every year? This time its steelbooks;

Maybe next year it will digibooks, then in 2017 collectors giftsets etc.

Personally though, I won't be buying until they release the original theatrical trilogy. If that means that I'll never own Star Wars on blu-ray, so be it. It may sound like I'm cutting off my nose to spite my face, but I find the "Special" editions changes so distracting its not worth it for me.

I actually think its actually Lucas whos cutting off his nose to spite his face.
Releasing the original laserdisc versions as bonus discs years ago was like throwing fans a mangy bone. "There, they'll be happy with what little they can get".
Releasing Blus with the original trilogy remastered isn't going to destroy his directorial vision for how he feels the films SHOULD have been made. Countless movies are released all the time that combine "original" or "theatrical" editions with the directors preferred cut or version. Just look at Bladerunner for an extreme example.

Also, on a side-note, I can only seem to find the Original Trilogy blu boxset secondhand. Is it sold out new everywhere?

It's OOP.

Rest assured, we will eventually get the original releases remastered for Blu-ray, Disney know how much the fans want it. At the moment the focus is The Force Awakens. I'd imagine we'll get new special editions too.

So what's the deal with the home video releases. I remember I said before that Fox still had the rights to release on home video until something like 2020 and I was told that's incorrect.

And now these re-releases are still from FOX not Disney. So what's the deal? I don't think we will see Disney release any of the original trilogy until the rights expire in 2020. So an UOT release couldn't possibly come from Disney before that time could it?
