So here’s something odd, maybe someone more experienced can help me out here.

My 4KTV is a Sony XBR-55X930D and my 4K player is the Sony UBP-X800, and my player is passing through an Onkyo surround sound receiver that DOES support a 4K / HDR pass-through.

On the player, there’s a setting under “screen settings” for HDR output where I can choose to set it to Auto or Off. Now, these two settings actually have different results when I put in a 4K disc. The picture definitely looks different depending on if I have my player set to Auto or if it’s set to Off and I manually turn HDR Video on via my TV’s “Picture mode” under “Picture adjustments”.

Is there a way to know which one is more “correct”? lol in my opinion, when the setting on the player is “Off” and I manually put my TV on HDR Video, the picture does look a little bit richer, but I’m by no means an expert.

If you're setting HDR to off in the player then it's sending a converted SDR output to the TV. This is not what you should be doing with an HDR TV. It's not "correct" but if you prefer it, then....

Huh.

I’ll have to do some more experimenting, then. I feel like I should be “wowed” more than I am lol.

HDR isn't to everyone's taste, and in my experience it's definitely not like Vivid mode on steroids as the common misconception tells it, often it's the opposite with a darker average picture level than SDR (and that's properly calibrated ~100 nit SDR, never mind the ridonkulous SDR levels that some people use which will only make HDR seem even dimmer, though that's not me throwing any shade at you personally, more of a general grumble).

True. Marketing is very misleading re; HDR. For a lot of content the difference can be fairly subtle. It's more about the nuance in colors rather than bright flashy colors.

Well, this is the thing that some seasoned veterans seem to not quite - and I'm treading carefully with my words here as I respect the hell out of these guys - understand, or if they do they just don't care.

The kind of insane peak brightness that I've reported measuring on the ZD9 is usually reserved for smaller specular details, NOT the image as a whole and that's one of the core misunderstandings with what HDR usually does. Yes, there is some content that has very high average brightness as well as peak (though even that doesn't 'blind' me, the eyes being very adaptive things) but in the main HDR is used to enhance those brightest points while keeping APL at a more SDR-esque level.

if the footage is properly exposed and amenable to leveraging an HDR effect of whatever chosen in the frame…..and graded so (creative intent) as to take advantage of that, then with side by side viewing of the SDR iteration, the HDR version can be quite obvious whereas the SDR version sometimes being described as comparatively dull, or perhaps "depressing" (in the above post #10308, listen to analysis from J.Z. at ~ 38 min mark)
