My guess is that 4K adoption will get a significant boost from the intro of the PS4, just as Blu-ray did from the PS3. The intro price of the PS4 is $400 vs the $700 for the 4K Sony Media player. Downloadable true 4K movies and TV shows will be available for both players.

That is how I will begin 4K equipment adoption and I will have a lot of company. There will be a growing movement away from disk media in favor of 4K downloadable content. I'm OK with that.

Nope, it's all about the collection with me. On my shelf, ready to grab.

Not sure what happened with the demo you viewed but, frame rate acquisition and exhibition is the most critical factor….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...fo#post7942755

Most recently, one could appreciate this is one had visited the BBC exhibit at IBC’s Future zone and compared images between the two LCD monitors comparing traditional frame rate to HFR. For a little explanation, scroll down to “"BBC R&D…., here - http://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/blog/2013/09/4k-crazy-at-ibc

^ P.S.
By “traditional” frame rate, I’m referring to less than or equal to 60fps.
By "HFR", I’m referring to > 60 fps acquisition and exhibition.

Unless you have to feel the texture of the disk in your hand, I don't get it.

4K movies come with Ultraviolet. You turn on your PS4, go to your collection of purchased 4K movies and "cybergrab" one. No issues with physical storage or deterioration of media, slipcovers, etc. What's not to like?

Speaking as someone wary of the cloud, the thing that's not-to-like about UV, is the loss of control, real or perceived. The disc in hand is a constant. The content in the cloud, the network connection, and any number of others things are variables.

Not an argument against UV, per say. Just an attempt to help a non-physical media fan better understand those of us who still like to own something more tangible.

I have no issue with storage. I'm very proud of my collection. I like having the case to hand.

My bet is that both of you would eventually embrace 4K via download if it is the only alternative.

lets just say that there's a lot of us who would stop paying for media if it ever goes to digital downloads only. no value in them. no resale, no being able to touch your media... knowing it's YOURS and will be yours even when companies lose licenses etc.

Well Ray, for one thing, how the hell can I do an unboxing YouTube video of a 4K cybergrabed movie?

after being here for 8 years it's amusing to see the same arguments tread and re-tread over the decades. this same thing was said about DVD. sigh, so many people just looking for the end of physical media

The previously posted video from the same author showing a walkthrough of the 4K movie interface and his latest download of Looper seemed to work for him.

You buy it,download it to your Sony 4K Media Player (2 Tb with provision for external drives) It's yours. You have an urge to touch, fingerprints on the Media Player should take care of it.

don't trust non physical things + hard drives are MUCH MUCH more unstable than optical media is right now. wouldn't expect it to last more than 5 years

No way Ray, I’m talking unboxing my 4K Blu-ray movie, not the hockey puck. How do you do a YouTube video of unboxing 'bits'.

great so spend more money on backups of large collections. also, if you have a hard drive failure you lose a TON of movies. one disc goes bad in a collection due to a printing failure you're out one or two movies. not half your collection.
