as an aside, the Incits Awards are now available - https://www.incits.org/news-events/annual-awards#_ . Congrats goes to Chad Fogg and Minhua Zhou for receiving the Incits Technical Excellence Award for their contribution to the field of video compression, so important these days. There is much to thank you for all you have contributed in many areas.

There already exists native 8K displays and native 8K A/V receivers that offer 8K HDMI switching. Around the year 2026 in theory there well exist native 8K source material (technically 8K source material already exists as studio masters from the 1939 Wizard of Oz movie and the 1939 Gone With the Wind movie when the original film negatives were many years ago scanned at 8K). Then around the year 2026 consumers should see a 8K streaming box, 8K download hard drive server, 8K cable TV box, 8K satellite receiver, and possible a new 8K optical disc format called either 8K Blu-ray, 8K DVD, or some other name. ATSC 3.0 first generation boxes are native 4K, but by around the year 2026 the ATSC 3.0 boxes should support native 8K resolution also.

In most rural areas of the United States people have access to both Digital cable TV with fiber optic Internet service around 1,000Mbps. However in areas of the United States where some people call extreme rural areas, there is no cable TV service offered, therefore in so called extreme rural areas of the United States people subscribe to a satellite TV service like Direct TV or Dish Network to get their 4K and HD channels. Maybe one day Direct TV and Dish Network might merge to increase bandwidth, higher channel capacity, and new satellite equipment needed. However a merger like that might never happen.

Back in 2008 Direct TV came out with the AM21 ATSC tuner that contained two ATSC tuners that was interfaced to the Direct TV HR21 Pro. Its been 13 years since the AM21 two tuner ATSC came out and they are not being made anymore. Hopefully both Direct TV and Dish Network well develop and release a new ATSC 3.0 two tuner add on box.

Perhaps around the year 2026 both Direct TV and Dish Network might offer native 8K satellite receivers. Maybe even a whole house 8K Direct TV Genie that has 13 8K satellite tuners and 4 ATSC 3.0 over the air broadcast tuners. But one well need to wait to see what happens in 5 years.

I'd love to see more availability of content in 4K or even just HDR. I wonder if it will be common for films to have 8K digital intermediates in a few years. 8K does seem like something that would be easier to watch on physical media than stream due to bandwidth requirements.

Ha! What a surprising development. Broadcast content providers aren’t always going to use advances in bandwidth and/or compression to provide better pictures, they use it to cram yet more stuff down the pipe.

Maybe at first.
Afterwards, some streaming platforms will end up opting for better quality images. We will be soon enough.

Perhaps and I would welcome that although historically I only see lowered quality and heightened quantity.
