Default NVIDIA Announces New 2080 Cards with Links and 8K Playback Support

The last decade has seen a tremendous growth in the amount of video processing moving to the graphics card. As resolutions and file sizes have increased, video post has largely handled the size by increasing the power of the GPU, often taking advantage of the NVIDIA CUDA programming model.

Default LG unveils world's first 8K television with an OLED display

https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Com...n-OLED-display

Quote:
SEOUL -- LG Electronics has developed the world's first 8K television using organic light-emitting diode technology, with the product expected to hit the market as early as this year.

The South Korean manufacturer on Wednesday unveiled the TV, which boasts four times the resolution of the now-common 4K models. It plans to showcase an 88-inch version at the IFA trade show opening Friday in Berlin.

"We will be a leader in the upscale market segment by combining OLED and 8K," said an LG executive. The massive televisions will feature 33 million OLED elements to produce optimal colors for the image on screen, the company added.

Oh, brother......here we go again with the upgrade bug. I'd be all in for an 8k projector but not an 8k TV. If LG releases this monster this year will that speed up the production of hdmi 2.1 across the home theater product lines?

Impressive. Prices are great too (at least over here in the Benelux).

I don't care for 8K at this moment, but I would definitely be in for 4000 nits (D65) and an insane high zone count along with QD.

I'm anticipating Sony's next move at CES 2019.

It's obvious that 8K UHD Blu-ray is inevitable once the 8K UHD TV's roll out.

The 2020 color thing is completely bogus. The reason we don't have true full 2020 content now is because of the limitations of the capture and mastering system. Plus there just isn't a lot of naturally occurring colors that fall in that gamut. In reality, most common colors we see in nature fall in 709, with some going farther out. Once you go past P3 you are getting more into stuff like animation or man made colors. There are exceptions for sure, but they are certainly not the norm. But the 4K UHD standard supports out to full 2020, it won't require 8K at all. Getting the technology to actually reproduce full 2020 is taking longer than they probably hoped for, so now they're saying it will be around by the time 8K displays are, so they'll use that as a selling point. That still doesn't mean there will be content that has 2020, and even content that does the amount of material that will be even wider than P3 will be fleeting at best.
Kris, do you have some technical educative links for us on this, what you've just said above?

8k could be vital to the VR/AR industry. 8K would pretty much be photo realistic. Also, AR in 8K could give us Scarlet Johansson as digital assistant, so there is that!

I think 83" was just too much tech real estate for them to handle so they dialed it down to 82". One inch really doesn't matter too much, right?

Not random. There is logic in it. That's more or less the biggest size you can get away with on an install without requiring more than four hands (two people) to do the work and it's just large enough to showcase the technology and the 8K resolution in a single panel display. You really wouldn't want a smaller set for that resolution and brightness. The size also sets it apart from other sets, making it unique. There may also be technical considerations like "It was the best size we could get to function within the specs we were going for.".

I'm all in for supporting these 8k TVs... in hopes that this causes the price of true 4k projectors to drop lol.

Also JVC just announced their first 8k e-shift projector.
