and if you don't mind saying, what rod and striker are you using? i like to experiment with different combinations to make sure i can use many methods and many different types to make a fire if needed.
What I do is keep the "striker" stationary and pull the rod away from the striker. I use a broken piece of glass and a Coghlan's fire steel.
(The included striker barely works and I can't aim with the spine of my Ka-Bar )

I'm used to using a magnifying glass to make an ember but you need a good bird's nest for that. This fire steel stuff is way easier.

EDIT: Deep Dark Dirty Secret....0000 Steel wool is RIDICULOUSLY flammable. If you look at it the wrong way, it goes up. It's good to carry around a little. I also like the old Cotton Ball dipped in Vasoline trick.

i keep a few cotton balls impregnated with petroleum jelly in a waterproof container and a small resealable bag of wood shavings from planing wood (oak and poplar) in my shop. i have some steel wool, but never put any in my fire kit. i may need to do that. i've known about its ease-of-use in making fires, i just never put any in my kit. i also keep a ferro rod/striker, a bic lighter, an evaporation-proof lighter, a fresnel lens, and some jute twine in there.

and keep practicing with the knife, you'll get better.

The easiest knife to use for me is my father's Marine Corps issue Camillus (Ka-Bar) knife. It is just raw, uncoated, high, high, SKY HIGH carbon steel and can light a whole tree on fire in one swipe. My Ka-Bar (civilian dog's head) came with a coating on it which is scratching off bit by bit. The small blade on my old Swiss Army knife also works really well but I don't want to blow that blade up just making sparks. But yeah man...I figure it out.

i can't stand that coating they put on some knives these days. i bought the ontario blackbird and immediately took the coating off of it. the blade doesn't "look" perfect, but it's sharp as hell and can throw some sparks. i still have one blade i need to do that to; just haven't gotten around to it, yet.

How assassin of you. Clearing the cobwebs from sleepy time and getting dressed before breakfast while I watch new episodes of Modern Family and Chicago PD on Hulu.

That's always a plus, unless you're me and you've hated your job for years. Definitely need to renew the one license I have soon just in case a job in that field finally comes along.
