Yep. I got it there on the news as well just before I got the sports news this evening.

It's said the major fire at the cathedral is linked to the renovation of the building. The French president, Emmanuel Macron, will be making a statement soon about the 'terrible fire'. The pictures coming from it did not look too good at all. The spire of the building is burned to bits while they are flames still going through it. I do hope that there are no casualties coming from this fire caused by people being trapped inside it.

I remember watching the 2 versions of The Hunchback of Notre Dame years ago on TV both the B&W and the version from Disney. I would assume that people here who are fans of those films would be very shocked that this fire is now happening for real.

Just had to call Wells Fargo to find out why my card was declined twice in the last few days. Turned out it was locked because of some questionable transactions, which were thankfully flagged at the time and prevented, including an attempted $1,015(!) charge from Mexico. So the lady I spoke with cancelled my card and issued a replacement. I hate having to call up banks or credit card companies but this one went pretty smoothly.

Now I think I'll go find a snack.

From the video feed you can see the staging setup around the area burning, too me it is not looking good, more then likely the part that is burning atm will be a complete loss.

I just heard on France 24 now that part of the spire of the Notre Dame has collapsed.

For those of you living in the U.S.; they also reported that the image of the collapsed spire will be on the front page of the NYT tomorrow morning. I assume other newspapers around the world will have this image on their front pages tomorrow. The image of the collapsing spire of the cathedral is actually on the NYT website right now if you want to look at it.

Luckily there are no deaths or injuries reported so far which is a huge relief.

About 30,000 a day visit this major attraction in Paris. I have more information about President's Macron's speech. He actually was meant to make a major policy speech in his office & one of his officials reported to him that the fire was taking place at the cathedral. He then made the call to release the news to various TV news channels around the world. The speech was meant to be pre-recorded at 6pm, which is the same time of the start of the fire & broadcast it on French television at 8pm CET tonight.

There is bad news about the stain glass windows at the cathedral. It is reported that there is damage on those windows which are a very big part of history associated with the building. Firefighters are currently racing to salvage major art pieces from inside the cathedral.

Even U.S. President Donald Trump had released a tweet expressing his solidarity & giving some advice about the fire in Paris. He gave advice to the firefighters there to say that they should use helicopters to get rid of the flames from inside the building wherever possible.

It's heartbreaking.

On the good news front, they've managed to save several statues. Not sure about the paintings. The stained glass I'm sure didn't survive.

Weird as I was just watching a streamer this last week who was in Paris and was touring around the place and you are right, never been to Paris but what a absolute amazing piece of architecture and history, shame if it is all destroyed.

Amazingly the two towers at the front of the building are still standing strong but for how long?

I do hope to god that this part of the cathedral does not get destroyed. It will be a tragedy to see them gone.

just came in from helping my neighbors. one of them brought his mowers over so we could clean them and do some maintenance.

but it was nice 'cause it's cool enough outside that i wasn't even sweating.

I only heard tonight that the entire cathedral of Notre Dame is made of limestone & will not be recoverable at all even if firefighters are making efforts to get rid of the huge flames. I may be agreeing with you that it will not be salvageable at all. If that happens within the next few hours; it will be a huge loss of symbolism for the people of Paris & for the world.

How absolutely demoralizing, especially on the same day as the Boston Marathon bombings.

Just put in an order for the Alien 4k BD, expecting at least Aliens to be released as well so will hand my brother my copy of the Alien anthology on BD when he gets here.

Great point. I can't even imagine. They are responsible for destroying/damaging 850+ years of history. As my coworker just said... Notre Dame has survived WW2 and the Revolution, but not a remodel. This is heartbreaking. It's a loss for humanity.

Heartbreaking. I hope they can salvage anything and everything possible. They just don't build anything like how they used to, with those older architecture styles. Build a new one for another 850+ years.

Yes it is. On Alien do you like the cover? I can't understand why they don't use the egg since its so iconic and sort of leaves the Aliens a mystery though everybody has probably seen it by now anyway
