Eating supper after cleaning my closet out. OMG that thing was way too packed full of needless junk. I think I may be a pack-rat. I'll have to curb that somehow.
I live about a mile and a half from where this happened and awoke like 4 am to a few somewhat loud bangs. Went right back to sleep and didn't think much of it. It was only leaving for work at 8 am that I found out what happened. Unfortunately I have to drive I-95 to work and with it being shut down it took me an extra half hour or so to get to work via alternate route. I caught a glimpse of the mess driving on an overpass above the interstate. There was at least 30+ emergency trucks working the fiery scene. Thankfully they contained the toxic methyl bromide released before it spread too much. It's 11 hours later and the normally busy highway is still closed indefinately for cleanup. Amazingly there was just one fatality.
A 66-year-old driver of a tractor-trailer was killed and five others, including a 16-year-old driver, were injured in an explosive crash involving four vehicles on Interstate 95 in Volusia County, forcing authorities to close the interstate and alert nearby residents of potentially hazardous chemicals, according to officials.
Northbound lanes of I-95 remain closed from Interstate 4 to State Road 421 near Port Orange because of the crash, which occurred around 3:30 a.m. Thursday at mile marker 257. Southbound lanes reopened a couple of hours after the accident.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a logging truck driven by John Winkler, 58, of San Mateo, Fla., overturned, spilling logs onto the interstate. A car driven by 16-year-old Victoria Granger, of New York, crashed into the logs, the FHP said.
A big rig pulling two trailers of methyl bromide, which was being driven by Francis Trammel, of Neptune Beach, Fla., then rear-ended the logging truck and caught fire, the FHP said. Trammel was killed in the crash, troopers said.
A U.S. Postal Service tractor-trailer driven by Samuel Behar, 68, of Miami, was also involved in the crash, the FHP said.
