CTA Forecasts Show Ultra HD Blu-ray Players In Decline

More signs of the decline of the physical disc player market surfaced with the recent release of the Consumer Technology Association’s (CTA’s) 2020 January Sales & Forecasts Report, which now shows that shipments of Ultra HD Blu-ray players to the United States declined in both 2018 and 2019, following the withdrawls of Oppo and Samsung , respectively, from the category.

Most alarming is that North America led by the U.S. is the region with the heaviest percentage of overall 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player and disc-based software sales. Since the format’s launch in 2016, all other regions have lagged significantly behind.

still hyped?

there is another, more serious side beyond that of the raw entertainment/escapism value of the upcoming movie, as was well said –

“This project is a tremendous opportunity to increase interest in the Navy and Naval Aviation, highlight the capabilities of aircraft carriers and carrier air wings, and showcase the professionalism, extensive training, and leadership of Naval Officers, Chiefs, Warrants, and the world's finest Sailors.

The goal of this project is to accurately showcase Naval Aviation platforms and warfare capabilities as well as demonstrate the professionalism, diversity and talents of the Naval Aviators, Chiefs, Sailors, civilians and families who comprise Naval Aviation, while illuminating the culture of excellence within Naval Aviation, and ensure the proper presentation of the pride, professionalism and excellence indicative of the Navy and its core values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment.”

Commanding Officer Navy Reserve Carrier Strike Group FIFTEEN
and Navy Technical Advisor to Top Gun: Maverick

P.S.
The core values of the U.S. Army and those members who live by them are pretty good too - Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage

From a technical advisor behind last week’s Super Bowl –

“Unlike just rote upconversion [4K resolution] and downconversion where it’s just really a function of mathematics, [HDR] is a function of subjective authoring in terms of what the colors look like. Yes, you get the bigger color space, but, ultimately, it’s up to the beholder to say whether it looks good or not. And that has to do with lookup tables and other types of conversions that end up making the color true on both sides. Frankly, it’s a pain in the butt.

And then you’ve got to make sure that you’re serving two masters equally: you’re serving the HDR realm with the best possible HDR color space, and that comes right from the folks that are operating video in the back of the truck here, and shading the cameras in high dynamic range. But when you’re doing that, you need to make sure that what’s translated for the wider audience in SDR isn’t messed up.

The hardest thing is actually the down conversions for everybody else.”

I’ll just be watching the Oscars on TV this year with my wife. Now I've got to go out and get us some guacamole dip to enjoy while taking in the show later today. Hope your favorites win.

British TV specialist Aquavision has unveiled a 100-inch 4k LED LCD TV with 24ct gold plated aluminium surround. Aimed at the luxe end of the display market, the DB100 is being exclusively stocked in Harrods, and has a retail price of £108,000.

A global marketing drive launches Q1, but the company says it already has orders from the UK, Middle East and the USA. Aquavision says its clients include celebrities, business leaders and luxury hotels.

Watching the Oscars last night, until the very end, my wife, a couple close friends and I were awed and even a bit uncomfortable with the entertainment business in that the presenters felt compelled to continually promote the push for more gender and ethnic diversity in movie making which seemed to occupy so much of an underlying theme of the proceedings.

Whereas, in the scientific fields, for example medicine, people have been open to gender and ethnicity for years and don’t even think about the fact these folks are not male and of Persian, Chinese, etc. descent….

Jobs, grants and their careers are based on merit and have been so for a long time. Hollywood seems a bit behind some of the rest of us.

...who are often the sort of people who wouldn't know what good picture quality looked like even if it smacked them on the ass with a banjo. That's not a dig at OLED tech but just at the sort of mentality that'd pay £108K for a gold-plated TV. Probably get it installed then play nothing but YouTube and DVDs on it lol

OLED tech? But that's an LCD! You're confusing me now.

True point, though. That these rich people often get this kind of stuff for show as a "status symbol" more than anything.

Reminds me of a story I read, about a wealthy fellow (I think Russian) who got a pair of Bowers & Wilkins Nautilus loudspeakers, and while having them "installed" asked for the wires to be cut. He didn't want to actually use these expensive, exclusive speakers to listen to music; he simply wanted them for decoration!

Parasite won all the big ones, four of them, it was fantastic, it made history by being the first non-English talking (subtitles) movie in the Academy Awards history to win Best Picture.
It opens the doors to the entire world, expanding over Hollywood's portals.
This is like a totally new world mentality in the Hollywood movie biz...all for the better of everyone.
In that expanded perspective we all win! It's like 2020 is the brand new start of a better film industrial world. I couldn't be happier, even if 1917 was my number one favorite film of the entire year.
I'm super happy because 1917 won all the three major technical achievements in cinema:
1. Gold Oscar to Roger Deakins for Best Cinematography.
2. Gold Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
3. Gold Oscar for Best Sound Mixing.

So, how can someone who loves movies not be happy!
Joker won the Oscar for Best Score (Music) and rightly so, but 1917 was just right behind with also an amazing music score, in my sincere music listening opinion.

It's a very good thing actually that Parasite won Best Picture and Best Director over 1917 for the future of the cinema industry. Parasite has all the ingrédients for the arts and sciences of the Académicien voters. And so 1917 //// I bet it was a very close call. Both are champs in my green book of cinema.
Number one, Parasite, and number 2 extremely close, 1917 ... nobody is in pain everyone gain.

The only oil in the ointment...The Irishman.
But I'm not worry one single bit, the film is excellent and Martin Scorsese is alive.
"Killers of the Flower Moon" - 2021

Don't adjust that HDR dial on your TV, let it optimize herself automatically on a frame by frame basis ...HDR10+
