How close were you to see pixel structure? Sure I might believe a poor source being easier to spot with MPEP break up but I never noticed pixel structure on 100in LCD projected image unless I within a couple feet of the screen. And now that I have a SXRD based projector I can't see visible pixel structure unless I get right next to the screen.

I just don't buy what you are seeing as pixel structure unless the inter spacing between the pixels on the set in question is really that bad. 4K LCD is still going to have spacing between the pixels. SXRD/LCOS units just look more natural/analog like due to virtually non existence of the wire showing between the pixels.

That's exactly why I stuck w/ DLP for now. A flat panel that large is bound to have some sort of pixelization/motion blur/artifacts-yuck!

There has been a lot of publicity hype about the fact that The Hobbit was being shot with high resolution (*5K*) digital cameras at an uncommon frame rate (48fps).

I’ve been out of the loop for awhile, but unless there is some recent news of which I’m unaware, there has been relatively dead silence ever since the very beginning of the production and currently, as to whether this motion picture would be finished in 4K and whether or not there would be 4K deliverables.

In essence….just because something is acquired in 4K or 5K doesn’t make it a given that there will be a 4K DCP, especially since, in this case (i.e. 3D), two streams at 48fps produce A LOT OF data for a digital intermediate post facility and supporting vendors to digest. You should not at all be surprised if the spatial resolution will ultimately be finished and shown at 2K no matter what the format (2D or 3D) or frame rate (48fps or 24fps) that your local Mulitplex exhibits this motion picture at.

Seriously, however, I think there is an ‘appreciable’ difference (meaning….eventual ’value’ to serious enthusiasts) between 4K and 1080p displays, no matter what the size, even as small as 20” - http://www.digitaltrends.com/home-th...-monitor-ever/

For upgrading same-sized TVs, most people will need to alter their current seating arrangements in order to enjoy full advantage of their purchase but, as I’ve said before, moving closer comes with the benefit of a more immersive cinema-like experience without seeing screen artifacts like with 1080p displays. But hey, if one is not willing to alter their furniture arrangement(s)….that’s o.k., there are people who are not willing to purchase Blu-rays and would prefer to watch something more compressed like On Demand movies from their cable company, etc., easily accessible with a click of the remote because they feel the difference in quality doesn’t override the convenience factor. Different strokes for different folks.

Personally, I’m looking forward to hearing the presentations about Ultra High Definition Imaging on Thursday afternoon at this month’s SMPTE Annual Technical Conference and also Lukasz Litwic’s paper comparing simulation results from the JCT-VC HEVC test model against an industry-leading AVC encoder -

4K aint going away. I’m always for technological improvements. Discretionary entertainment spending is a personal thing and I’ll leave it up to others to decide what is right for them and when.

Scroll down to the abstract for John Galt’s presentation, i.e…..“ In 2004, one camera manufacturer introduced a 4096 x 2048 pixel CCD camera for cinema applications and declared it was a "4K" camera. Soon many would follow, and today this particular piece of obfuscation is rampant in the motion picture industry. Despite all the technical challenges in creating the first "True 4K" large format digital cinema camera one of the greatest challenges we are faced with is how to end the "4K" confusion. – I would love to hear the people from Red’s response to that as John certainly does have a way with words.

That said, has there been any talk if blu-ray will support 4k? im looking foward to 4k down the road but not if its going to require a whole new format

Well, 4K BD50’s would be ‘do-able’ with HEVC and some people might prefer it that way (skip to the last line of this piece….http://www.homemediamagazine.com/blu...ray-disc-28392) but I think it would be far more astute and *future-proof* to employ the use of larger capacity Blu-ray discs….even if that requires more time and effort to accomplish by all parties involved.

To date, this is about the most candid public statement press types can pull out of a high-ranking official consumer electronics voice (a good guy)….pay attention to the end of the clip -
