That remark sounds a lot like me when I saw my parent's slides projected on a wall sized screen for the first time in decades, or when I saw Lawrence in 70mm.
On the "Oh my God, film is so beautiful" front, I figured you all would appreciate my little project. I am a huge Chip and Dale/Rescue Rangers fan. So, why not combine my love for my two favorite chipmunks with my love of film? Sounds like a good combination to me..... ![]() (My film of choice? Fuji Velvia 100. Absoultely gorgeous color and makes a wonderful 6K scanned image even in 35mm.) http://www.theacorncafe.org/phpbb/vi...hp?f=9&t=30723 Here's a test shot for scanning purposes. I'd say ol' 35mm Velvia holds up pretty well, don't you think? https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6N...ew?usp=sharing Last edited by singhcr; 06-17-2015 at 09:16 PM. |

Little known fact…. standard dynamic range color correction often involves compromising color for brightness (one way or another….with current SDR color correction, pumping up the reds allows more perceived brightness than just using yellow). For example, within a scene, a colorist may not be able to provide the filmmaker optimally desired brightness to both the sky, and at the same time, to objects (actors) in the foreground because grading at 100 nits just won’t allow it (the process is hamstrung). Point being, HDR isn’t all about the blackest blacks and the whitest whites, there is also value elsewhere. ![]() |

A DI in general, it made everything look the same and a lighting cameraman non existent.
It has made cinematographers lazy as they can fix it all in post. Give me ENR any day. And I am not all about the photochemical over the digital, Nolan's films for example I find super ugly. Plus HDR and everything else, its all just looking too artificial and without style. I would rather see a CCE print if Se7en again than the digital try at the look the BD has. One day we will find a print and scan it and I will be happy. |

Long, but good story (3 sessions…start from the first to understand the history). Mike is referring to the two guys in the white suits jumping off the helicopter coming to kidnap poor Mrs. Grain (film) near the end of the 3rd session and subsequently what she then looked like after they were *done* with her -

Speaking of HDR, I stopped by my local Best Buy over my lunch break to see the HDR Jurassic World footage. Of course, that TV had motion smoothing on and the color was set to vivid so I couldn't objectively evaluate it at all.
I was very impressed with LG's 1080p OLED TV, as well as the Samsung 4K LCDs. They don't compare to the OLEDs, but they are far better than they used to be. I saw some 4K footage of House of Cards, Bloodlines, Breaking Bad, and Daredevil. Overall, it was quite good, but with one exception: whenever the LCD TVs showed nighttime footage, such as Daredevil, there was a horrendous amount of noise in the picture, far more than just mere sensor noise. I also noticed Breaking Bad looked very odd at times because the TV did a very poor job of rendering grain naturally. I can only imagine what The Walking Dead would look like on these sets. I remember when I was shopping for a new TV a few years ago, I used BDs of Up and Casino Royale. Up was a test to see how well a TV could display a "noiseless" image, and the black and white sequence in Casino Royale was a good test to see how well the TV could display coarse grain. The LCD TVs failed, particularily with the grainy sequence. Did anyone else notice this with the 4K Netflix footage? |

I’m always appreciative of my vision. http://motionpicturelightingandgrip....ers-announced/ Although, an expressed concern from those responsible for outfitting post house mastering facilities has been regarding what will the longevity be of OLED monitors running HDR content all the time….which has yet to be determined with certainty. It is believed that it will be substantially shorter than that for SDR, which has been the traditional viewing/mastering mode. |
