The tone of Mockingjay is completely different from CF, so for people who haven't read the books, it's like the momentum does a complete 180. |

What can I say? I was legit shocked that the movie surpassed my original expectations. The ending of Catching Fire leaves you hyped as hell for the next installment, but as the months progressed, you start having doubts that because of the 2-parter finale, Part 1 of Mockingjay would suffer due to the slow, dragged out buildup. And I knew very well that was bound to happen.......or so I thought.
Mockingjay Part 1 isn't the action fest you were probably expecting, especially after the cliffhanger of Catching Fire, but that actually helped the film find it's identity and became the best thing about the film. A film about propaganda, and the "tit-for-tat" war that goes on between the Rebels and the Capitol. A chess game is the best way to describe the latest entry in THG franchise. There's more dialogue that really matters for one, and this is easily the most emotional movie of the three. The first 15-30 minutes may start off slow, but the remainder of the film grabs your attention and never lets go. Not once was I bored by the slow scenes or the dialogue. Minus one brief moment of shaky cam, the picture in this movie looked flawless, and I give Francis Lawrence tremendous credit for his directing in this one. As others have stated already, the grain in Mockingjay is beautiful to look at. Jennifer Lawrence gives her best acting performance in a Hunger Games film to date, and just commands the screen every time she's present, which as you can imagine, is often. A big surprise for me was Liam Hemsworth as Gale, who I knew would get more screen time based on the plot of Part 1, and whom I never cared for, but his little dialogue scenes here and there were actually quite tolerable. Julianne Moore was a nice addition to the cast, as was Phillip Seymour Hoffman in CF, and both of them had a large role in this movie and just made their respective characters work. The one thing I can definitely disagree with Youtube reviewer Chris Stuckmann on (who I usually agree with), is that the story was not dull, and there were more action bits than I expected there to be throughout the film. So don't worry about lack of excitement, because the film is very well paced in that regard. Finally, you're gonna love "The Hanging Tree," sung by Katniss herself. [Show spoiler] It's a track that I'm sure all fans of the series, old and new, will have etched in their heads for a while to come. If you thought the ending of CF was a doozy, then the wait until November 2015 is going to feel unbearable.I give it my highest marks, 5/5. Better than Catching Fire only so slightly, because unlike the slow first half of CF, Mockingjay felt like a true standalone film, and had my complete attention from second #1. I thought the first two were boring, this one soared. I wish the poll was up so we could rate it. The movie felt very adult and I loved the score.
