I would like consumers to see an HDR content shootout between Active HDR with Dolby Vision and, for the lack of an official name, Active HDR with Samsung Vision….

![]() If some consumers are unhappy by being restricted to watching a movie as it was meant to be in terms of luminance and don’t consider a faithful reproduction of the Director’s original creative intent to be of paramount importance, then looking forward to advances in color coverage, I think they will have no problem with accepting observer metamerism.... The AIS also recognized two films for Best use of high dynamic range: Warner’s Live by Night (live action feature) and Pixar’s Finding Dory (animated feature)

With HLG, HDR-10 and Dolby Vision, with say a 500 nit TV,
is the 1000 nits (for HDR-10) and 4000 nits (for DV) compressed in the 500 nits or is it 0-100 nits SDR + 101-500 nits highlights compressed? or is it 0-100 nits SDR + 101-500 nits highlights with clipping at 500 for above that? |

HLG is a relative brightness system, not absolute like HDR10, so concerns about clipping/mapping are moot because the image is designed to be rebuilt by the TV itself.
As for HDR10 it all depends on the implementation, but AFAIK none of the <1000-nit displays operate with a 100-nit SDR-style baseline and then HDR sauce on top (which wouldn't actually be a bad idea given that some UHD movies can end up looking extremely dark on underpowered displays). Some manufacturers prefer to clip content past a certain point, others prefer to map the whole range, but you'd have to go to somewhere like AVS and pick their brains for specifics. DV is designed to map the image to the TV's capabilities as best it can using content-derived metadata to do so, but in terms of specifics I have none to give you. |

@ LordoftheRings, in retrospect, to be geographically and politically precise, in my original post on the subject from last May ( For the record, the plan as exclusively revealed on Blu-ray.com (last May), long before the mass media got the news.) I should have said 4 venues (rather than 3) having insensitively

'Lucy' by the way; it is a very underrated film. A film for the brain, truly...highly intelligent imagination. There is no doubt in my mind. ______ On another previous mentioned note: ![]() I've watched the 3D version last night. Technically; pretty powerful. Film merit: 88 (out of 100) ... Underrated, very. The film has soul written all over it...deep soul that reaches the stars above the sky. Last edited by LordoftheRings; 02-17-2017 at 07:52 PM. |

I like your "tour map". I took the first passageway into the Labyrinthian and found my way through a black hole no problem and back to the other side under the dark abyss.
'Lucy' (my own score) = 87 (film impact/value/merit/psychological effect/subconscious...all that wild jazz...through the super intelligent/psychokinetic tunnel of time/scape) * Only if you absorb the same stuff that she did. It's a cinematic's perspective, Luc Besson. His own visual imagination...what films are made of. The rest is simply my interpretation. Last edited by LordoftheRings; 02-19-2017 at 01:57 AM. |

Eh, I see MTI gave a plug to the LG OLED at the very end of that ^ article. For brand/model balance, I’ll think of a way to highlight the Sony Z9D.

So, if you’re not creating HDR content and simply watching it as an enthusiast, best to select the ‘Cinema’ Pro or Home modes as opposed to the Custom mode, if the appropriate selection designation for your particular use wasn’t clear to all readers for when we originally discussed this topic last November….
