I'd normally agree, but I've a feeling a 4k Bluray of Star Wars 7 will make a lot more people (than otherwise would have) buy into 4k in 2016/7. I think it can't help but give the format a huge boost.
It won't ever replace Bluray, it's very much just a new type of bluray, like 3D was/is. |

I should think that Ep VII will be finished at 2K. But if the rumours of an OT re-release are true, then how about a 4K BD release of the restored OT (which WAS done in 4K by Lowry) just in time to usher Ep VII into theaters? Awesomeness guaranteed.

With piracy concerns I see the studios not doing it for that exact reason. Wouldn't the DCI version have different gamma values anyway? |

17:9 is not gonna happen. Admittedly, 4096x2160 is recognised as a valid resolution by my 4K TV (which can be viewed with slight borders or cropped to fit), but the powers-that-be will not be switching from the 16:9 frame size for UHD home video.

agree but that has nothing to do with the question you asked which was if you should be buying BDs now. Since 4k BDs are not out yet and won’t be out for more or less another year (if everything goes well) BD is not outdated (still arguably the best AV available for most content) and 4k BDs are not even out yet let alone near mature enough. If someone asked should I stop buying DVDs if I care about quality. My answer would be you should have stopped years ago for the two reasons you gave . Quote:

that is not accurate. The BD movie standard was only finalized at the end of 2005. What happened was in Japan you had BD involved companies that made semi-proprietary PVRs that were "related" to BD (i.e. used the blue laser at .1mm depth). The recorder someone bought in Japan before 2006 used proprietary disks to the manufacturer and could not play the movie BD disks that launched in 2006. here is an image to the first Sony PVR ![]() it used a 27GB cartridged disk with a data transfer of 36mbps while this Panasonic used a different 25 GB cartridged disk with a data transfer of 36mbps for BD movies it is a 25GB (single layer or 50GB dual layer) they are not in a cartridge and have a bitrate of 54mbps. There a lot more differences (such as codecs....) |

Having seen a 55" OLED @ 2K rez, and then walking over to the big 85" 4K LEDs...I have to say that I am super excited about the prospect of a big 80+ 4k OLED. I think it's going to be the ultimate TV for 4K Blu-Rays. I'm so giddy at the thought of that prospective TV for BD 4K that I may be willing to pay up to $9,999 for this hypothetical TV, which is double what I've said I'd pay previously for any TV (since I consider TVs in this day and age to be 3-4 years max utility prior to moving on to something better).
Now, we just need CES to come and for the BD 4K manufacturers and content providers (I'm looking at the movie studios) to come out strong with some announcements for 4Q15. Fingers crossed... |

If we do get 4K Blu this time next year what do any of you think the support for the format from the studios will be like?
Maybe a couple of them sitting on the fence a while? |
