The change to flat screens alone was a huge improvement over the 4X3 tube design. We're not changing anything this time so the "OMG this is different" novelty is not there.
Totally. For the average consumer (who doesn't read forums like this, runs their LCD on torch mode, and doesn't calibrate their display at all, which probably encompasses 90% of the population), 4k won't be a game changer. Many still think up converted DVD is as good as BD. Plus that same 90% don't have dedicated HT's and watch TV in their living rooms so a 100" screen to really see the 4k difference won't be commonplace either.

I'd normally agree, but I've a feeling a 4k Bluray of Star Wars 7 will make a lot more people (than otherwise would have) buy into 4k in 2016/7. I think it can't help but give the format a huge boost.

It won't ever replace Bluray, it's very much just a new type of bluray, like 3D was/is.

I should think that Ep VII will be finished at 2K. But if the rumours of an OT re-release are true, then how about a 4K BD release of the restored OT (which WAS done in 4K by Lowry) just in time to usher Ep VII into theaters? Awesomeness guaranteed.

I'm inclined to agree, although plans can change.

If ever...because from what I've seen & read, 16x9 is still the OAR for 8K.
I still think it would be a good idea for 4K BD to be 17:9 full 4K as opposed to UHD. for most there would be a slight crop, but for those with 4K projectors and possibly new premium direct view sets this would be a boon. Also, instead of doing a master for 16:9 4K BD and a 17:9 DCI for the cinema, they could use the same one. You would be getting a cinema standard in your own home .

With piracy concerns I see the studios not doing it for that exact reason.

Wouldn't the DCI version have different gamma values anyway?

17:9 is not gonna happen. Admittedly, 4096x2160 is recognised as a valid resolution by my 4K TV (which can be viewed with slight borders or cropped to fit), but the powers-that-be will not be switching from the 16:9 frame size for UHD home video.

The UOT (restored OT) in 4k ? would love to see that happen but just to have it on dvd or blu ray will make star wars fans go bonkers

We already have OT on DVD. If Disney have half a brain they will release it on Blu-ray just before Episode 7 hits the theatres

Obviously I would have see what the difference will look like, but even with a 120" screen, I just don't see rebuying a lot of my BDs. Most of the stuff I like is older, and I'm thinking I won't see much of a difference. Maybe some of the movies that were done in IMAX or 70mm. Also, my eyes aren't quite as good anymore going past 50. But I'll check the reviews, and rebuy something I really like that gets a good review to see if I can tell the difference on the 4K BD.

They don't have the Home Video rights, Fox has them...

Yes it will be 2K, also because it's gonna be converted to 3D...

agree but that has nothing to do with the question you asked which was if you should be buying BDs now. Since 4k BDs are not out yet and won’t be out for more or less another year (if everything goes well) BD is not outdated (still arguably the best AV available for most content) and 4k BDs are not even out yet let alone near mature enough. If someone asked should I stop buying DVDs if I care about quality. My answer would be you should have stopped years ago for the two reasons you gave .

And, I wouldn't be saving a few dollars, but 100s.

I have well over 600 movies, so I think I have plenty to enjoy
Well 100s is only a few dollars. But you are missing the point if you are willing to watch those 600 films you already have for the rest of your life over and over again you will save even more money. Which is why the question was foolish. If you want to buy movie X (today, tomorrow, next week, next month..) to watch , why skip it and wait because 4k might come out in a year and that film might come out in 4k in 5 years (or maybe never)?

Quote:
.Obviously, it was foolish of me to pose the question to members on a thread devoted to the subject, however.
This makes no sense since my reply had nothing to do with 4k BDs.

don't know what they said at an mpeg conference but considering their 4k stream looks and sounds worst than a BD I think they should focus on that instead of adding other BW hogs that would decrease even more the A/V quality.

I want 4K Blu-ray to do well and in my opinion if the BDA cuts out features in the next few months and than adds 3 or 4 extensions down the road that will cause it problems in the long term.
agree with you on that but the tech does need to be feasible at a "reasonable" cost.

I hope it's a global launch in all existing Blu-ray markets.

that is not accurate. The BD movie standard was only finalized at the end of 2005. What happened was in Japan you had BD involved companies that made semi-proprietary PVRs that were "related" to BD (i.e. used the blue laser at .1mm depth). The recorder someone bought in Japan before 2006 used proprietary disks to the manufacturer and could not play the movie BD disks that launched in 2006.

here is an image to the first Sony PVR

it used a 27GB cartridged disk with a data transfer of 36mbps

while this Panasonic

used a different 25 GB cartridged disk with a data transfer of 36mbps

for BD movies it is a 25GB (single layer or 50GB dual layer) they are not in a cartridge and have a bitrate of 54mbps. There a lot more differences (such as codecs....)

Having seen a 55" OLED @ 2K rez, and then walking over to the big 85" 4K LEDs...I have to say that I am super excited about the prospect of a big 80+ 4k OLED. I think it's going to be the ultimate TV for 4K Blu-Rays. I'm so giddy at the thought of that prospective TV for BD 4K that I may be willing to pay up to $9,999 for this hypothetical TV, which is double what I've said I'd pay previously for any TV (since I consider TVs in this day and age to be 3-4 years max utility prior to moving on to something better).

Now, we just need CES to come and for the BD 4K manufacturers and content providers (I'm looking at the movie studios) to come out strong with some announcements for 4Q15. Fingers crossed...

While it's good to see AVF's apparent longing for 4K Blu-ray, only a few months ago I was told by one of the site's head honchos that his "industry contacts" had told him that 4K Blu-ray wasn't gonna happen. They've certainly changed their tune, lemme tell ya!

If we do get 4K Blu this time next year what do any of you think the support for the format from the studios will be like?

Maybe a couple of them sitting on the fence a while?
