that's a heck of a lot cheaper than the first blu-ray players.

400 is actually a very decent price. hte panasonic and oppo 4k players will be around 1000. and like others have said, the very first regular blu ray players to hit hte market were $1000-$1500.

If anybody who actually knows about this please correct me if i'm wrong, but i would think the BDA would of mentioned this important aspect in their reports of 4K downconversion to 1080p displays.
It's AACS 2.0 encryption on particular UHD discs that can cause the player to not output any video whatsoever when it hits certain types of receivers or displays. Being 1080p may not be enough. This is a sticking point.

HDMI 2.0a may also be needed for color gamut control, not just HDR functionality.

HDMI 1.4 itself is fully capable of sending and receiving a 4K signal, as has been proven and evidenced by the numerous PC graphics cards on the market with HDMI 1.4 outputs that have been putting up 4K signals for several years now.
Then why does the Samsung UHD player manual specifically have a "yeah, but..." stipulation about AACS 2.0 encryption and potentially not being able to get a video signal at all?

Riddle me this, Batman.

Havnt read much and just now getting interested in this 4k thing. So a couple of questions because I need to make some decisions.

1. Will these new 4k Ultra blurays be in 3D?

2. Will old regular blurays play in the Ultra player?

3. Do I need to buy everything all over new as in TV & Player?

Thanks for the feedback. Got Em!!

So I see people are debating between 4k vs 3D. So some are saying that the current 3D blurays will be better than the new 4K Ultra blurays? Is the technology similar? Just trying to get answers and figure this thing out and how I plan to go about this. Got Em!!

The issue is that there is no 3D 4k format for the theaters or for UHD Blu-ray at present.

However, there are a lot more visual benefits from 2D 4K due to a higher bit depth (10 is standard but could go up to 12 with Dolby Vision), greater color gamut, high frame rates, wider contrast ratio, high dynamic range, etc.

Ok thanks for the info. Well atleast the new Ultra player will allow you to play either disk so its up to you which version on the bluray you want to buy. Got Em!!

I think this is pretty clear from the manual

If your TV does not support HDCP version 2.2, some of the Ultra HD Blu-ray titles may play in 1080p resolution

Look in the section about setting up the dual HDMI outputs. It states the AACS 2.0 stipulation that you may not get a picture at all there.

It says this in respect to the dual output:
Quote:
NOTE: If the AACS 2.0 was applied to the contents that you want to play, it may not be displayed on the screen depending on the AV receiver connected. For more detailed information, refer to the user manual of your AV receiver.
That reads like they're in full CYA mode when it comes to the HDMI pass-through on whatever AV receiver the user may have, i.e. it may not work, which is fair enough.

Besides, HDCP 2.2 is a fundamental part of the AACS 2.0 platform (<- click for slide from AACS presentation) so them stating it in the manual like that still pertains to HDCP 2.2, amongst other things.

Yeah like it states, and what Geoff followed up on, it depends on the receiver you have. Which makes sense.
