I just bought my LG 4K (UB8500) two days ago. I see your point, but I have sampled several blu movies and they look really good on this set. I know their is an "upconvert" to the set and it seems to work well.

So theres a big problem. 4K blus dont come until next year. I dont know if I can stand the wait. Because going back to 1080p is like going back to DVD after bluray. Painful to say the least.

Honestly, I'm almost regreting the purchase a bit. Its like the biggest tease. Like driving a Ferrari and the speed limit is 25 everywhere.
How did you run into all this 4K native content?

If you are referring to streaming, it's ok but not "blow my hair back" awesome.

Theres alot of places on youtube with real 4K video. I downloaded them through clipconverter.cc then put them on a flash drive.

I have a 70" set and I can all the details that were missing/blurred in 1080p and its driving me crazy. Even at store displays on smaller 4K tvs I've always been able to see the difference quite easily even at some distance.

I know alot of people say they have to sit a few feet from 4K to tell the difference etc but thats not really the case with me. OK maybe to most people the difference isnt huge, but with 4K theres essentially no blur or missing detail no matter how close you are to the screen - and the absence of that on 1080p is driving me a little crazy.

I was so looking forward to viewing my bluray collection on this TV but now.....I only want to see them in 4K.

Well I haven't experienced it outside of in store promos yet, but I don't think it will. A few movies I will want to rebuy in 4k but mostly 1080p blu ray looks pretty fantastic. Like watching DCPs in cinema hasn't ruined blu ray so I doubt 4k will.

Maybe I don't have an artists eye because 4K doesn't appeal to me. It's too much hi def to my eyes like too much sugar or salt to my taste buds.
Bluray looks perfect to me and dvd's aren't intolerable to me at all. I'll let them pass by like 3D.

omg... I so feel the pain here.

Will you obtaining your 4K Blu-ray discs from Walmart ??
Did you get pressured into buying this 70in TV ?
Did you forsee that there is not much content ?
Will you be putting all of your Blu-ray discs on eBay now that you have no longer the will to watch them ?

What is that you ACTUALLY wish to SEE in 4K ?? more lines on someones face ??

I don't know about 'other' people, but there's a STACK of Americans still buying DVDs. (gee... I even struggle to find Blu-ray's in B&M stores when I head to SoCal for my yearly trip). And then there's some that are being 'suckered' into buying 4K, just because.... the manufacturers NEEDED some other product to continue their production lines after we all bought Full HD 1080p TVs.

This is a such as sad story in the end..........

This probably doesn't count, but I have an 120" 1080P projector set up and when I go to IMAX theaters it makes my long for a 4K projector. I am not ready to drop $10K on it yet. So I'm sure if I could get a 4K projector in my house - yes it would defintely ruin it even more.

Well you're screwed then aren't you if you can no longer stomach 1080p Blu-ray, because for plenty of movies 1080p Blu-ray is it, many won't be released on UHD Blu-ray.

When I come over from Australia - I hit Frys / Walmart / Target / Best Buy - there's not exactly the MASSIVE range at any of these stores anymore - compared to our local JB Hifi. And prices (eg Best Buy) wildly differ !!

IMO - if anyone THINKS that 4K Blu-ray is going to replace the current model - then I'm sure that (whereever you guys are) that there is a bridge that they can sell them !

Does anyone really think that a B&M store is going to stock the DVD, the Blu-ray, and the '4K' version - each with a different price ??

this post sums a lot up:
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=1783

(don't worry : we are finding the same 'story' as the OP here : somewhat 'deceived' into buying the latest and 'greatest' - and there's zero content for that format (apart from maybe a few youtube clips). When you see people buy these TVs - alongside a HomeTheatreinaBox (HTB), $100 HDMI cable or soundbar - then you know they have just been 'upsold'.)

EDIT ! ECCK... looks like that thread got merged into here.

My old TV was 7 years old. It was time to upgrade, especially for 3D and a size boost from 46". I got 4K to be futureproof and because I was impressed by the demos. I knew there was not alot of content out there, but I didnt expect to care. After seeing it at home and in person and just being able to absorb it, Im addicted now and want all my content in 4K. I did not expect that at all.

Its incredibly frustrating that 99% of satellite broadcasts are still 720p/1080i. Its a joke.

All my family came over and checked out the TV - every single one of them had their jaws hit the floor - and these are hardcore 'DVD dont need bluray' people too.

See thats whats really sad - that theres this great technology out there that many people would really like or be interested in if mediocrity (streaming etc) wasnt so accepted and pushed on them

My sister asked if she could watch the NBA in 4K....what was I suppose to tell her? That the games still arent even 1080p? Thats pathetic beyond belief. Theres not a SINGLE person on this planet who can watch something in 4K and then 720p and say they dont care for one or the other. Yet 720p is the only option available on satellite because the masses have accepted it and dont demand more. And the satellite companies are plenty happy giving them a lower quality signal. What utter trash

Not sure what quality of projector your looking for, but they're down in the 4 thousand range now, at least lower end models. Maybe this time next year mid range models will be in that price range. Sucks that projectors always lag behind TVs in prices. I remember it taking FOREVER for 1080p projectors to be reasonably priced long after normal sets did.

Aye.

Yes the difference is noticeable & I can see & point out a 4K set from the entrance to the back of the warehouse. (kidding, but really not. )

I'd prefer to sit far far away while watching 4K cause I can still see the individual pixels.

Have you tried watching any BD's upscaled to 4K? They look better then 2K IMO but I notice a more "digital" look to them. Not as natural & color on 4K blows away any 1080p display. Who knew I could see 80 shades of red on 1 rose pedal.

Unfortunately since the format doesn't exist on http://www.blu-raydisc.com/en/index.aspx I ain't too pumped for UHD yet.

Same here on my 65X-9005A. 3D is mind blowing on this set. MI4K titles look noticeably sharper.

Looking forward to UHD BD and Sky UHD (when they get their ar$e in gear).

It's going to be a while as far as more reasonable pricing. I'm thinking at least two years before we see a $5K UHD projector...and that might be optimistic actually. I also don't want to sacrifice contrast from my current JVC. Contrast is still going to have a far greater impact on overall PQ than UHD resolution, P3, or 10 bit.

I tried the best looking bluray I have, Speed Racer. It looks alright, maybe a tiny bit better then on a 1080 set. Maybe. In all honesty I didnt see really any boost in quality. But the set is still 100% factory and I've yet to tinker with anything that may help boost 1080 sources.

Dont get me wrong bluray does not look ugly. But I cant but help and look everywhere on screen for the tiny details - and not find them. Some faces look like 'clay', perhaps a result of too much makeup, or maybe not. But I expect to see skin pores in every single 4K closeup - but its not always there in 1080. All the fine details are not there unless is an extreme closeup of something.

I think the best thing will be 4K players that upscale blurays. I know the TV has scaling technology, but I bet a proper 4K player will do a far better job. At that point blurays should become far more tolerable for me.

And its a little disappointing to see all the comments here saying that bluray is fine, and 4K is not needed. Its 'DVD is fine bluray is not needed' all over again. Yes you probably need a bigger set to really appreciate the difference, but there is a difference, and no 1080 bluray is not good enough anymore.

I had 9 fun years with 1080p bluray. Heres to the next 9 with 4K bluray

One, it sounds like you desperately need to calibrate your display, for starters. The factory defaults are horrible on most sets. The Disney WOW Blu-ray is actually quite good for calibration needs.

Two, Samsara is probably the finest example of live action 1080p Blu-ray yet produced. It better be as it's down sampled from a 4k DI struck from 65mm source footage shot by one of the best large-format cinematographers in the business, Ron Fricke. Absolutely stunning, and I can only pray it gets released on a premium UHD Blu-ray from that same 4k DI as it will probably make you cry it'll look so good. Like it's prequel, Baraka, this film is also profoundly moving with a very strong message.

Speed Racer is heavily processed and a low bitrate compression job, so it's not a good disc to judge image quality.

I think 4K players will also do a better job but so far the players I have tried (Oppo & Sony) do a pretty good job of upscaling + the TV also upscales any content as well.

If you are playing 1080p blu-rays on a 1080p blu-ray player only, it's gonna look like garbage. Like VHS quality. I'd recommend picking up a player asap if you don't have one already.

Also calibrate when ya get the chance. Even native 4K can look like garbage if the set ain't calibrated.

Well, you never know. More people might get more excited about UHD-BD once it actually exists.
