Looks like another revision to HDR&HDMI coming:
HDMI 2.1 with dynamic hdr metadata

Current HDR does not adapt to the specific hardware is being used on resulting in wrong color, this new revision should fix this.

This may or may not be able to be updated via firmware But it will completely depend on each individual manufactura weather that happens or not.

HDMI/CEA. HDMI 2.0a covers HDR EOTF signaling and static metadata. Dynamic metadata is to be covered in HDMI 2.1

Interesting I wonder what the effect will be with and without HDMI 2.1?

More accurate color as it adapts to your TVs limitations and HDR implementation likely.

Fingers crossed that it's something which can be added via firmware, but seeing as the "2.1" enabled gear will also need to have ST 2094 to be able to actually recognise and process the dynamic metadata to begin with, I dunno...

Good thing my Samsung TV is futureproofed. The same cannot be said of my Samsung K8500 or Denon receiver.

I believe this is only for Philips HDR and has nothing to do with hdr10 or dolby vision.

Philips hdr imo is dead in the water.

Yes that's what I was thinking too. Both Dolby Vision (DV) and Phillips are competing for the "high end" HDR and both use dynamic metadata that will need HDMI 2.1. I doubt if any TVs are updatable to 2.1, otherwise they would be DV-ready too.

I've already accepted that I'm going to live with HDR10 for a few more years (oh woe is me ), until the DV 65"+ OLED sets are in my desired price range. As it is, HDR10 is a huge upgrade and I'm very happy with it (and the new format as well). Good times.

This applies to both Philips and Dolby Vision HDR, dynamic metadata isn't supported (yet) by HDR-10

Yes the HDMI 2.1 applies to both Phillips and Dolby Vision, the only difference is that Dolby Vision isn't dead in the water. The lack of DV is probably what Disney is waiting for since they are supporters.

An HDMI 2.0a port is required to accept the static metadata of an HDR10 signal, but HDMI 1.4 is sufficient for Dolby Vision, which embeds its dynamic metadata in the signal itself.

"We had anticipated the challenge of getting high dynamic range (HDR) and HDR metadata over HDMI interfaces. So what we did was develop our own technology that tunnels all the way through HDMI interfaces back to version 1.4, including the signaling and the metadata. So for televisions that have HDMI inputs and present Dolby Vision signals, as a requirement from us, the HDMI inputs have to support Dolby Vision in addition to the on-board OTT apps that support Dolby Vision and in order to make that work we developed in-band signaling as well as the ability to send 12-bit video over what is effectively an 8-bit interface. All this is implemented in televisions and storage devices that support Dolby Vision."

So just to be clear, HDMI 2.1 is only necessary for Philips' implementation of dynamic metadata on their own version of HDR, but Dolby Vision only requires 1.4 and up?

I just saw this post on AVS Forum:

I have confirmed that the new P-Series will accept Dolby Vision via HDMI or the appropriate apps; it works either way.

The new Vizio P-Series has HDMI 2.0a inputs. And it accepts DV over HDMI. So do we have nothing to worry about if all we want is DV compatibility in the future?

But your TV and Player must have the a Dolby Vision enabled chip set, Samsung and Sony chose not to support it, and therefore don't have the required chip set.

HDMI 2.1 is for color accuracy and consistency, not compatibility

Is there no provision in HDR10 for downconversion to existing 4K SDR sets (ideally still benefiting from 10-bit color)?

This kind of thing screams 'launch feature', but the Samsung player doesn't seem to do anything like that...

Hopefully the Oppo will by the time it comes out.
