I hope this is a firmware update because I am not upgrading my TV again for atleast another 5 years since I just bought it in June of this year. I wish they would just keep to one standard and stop changing it. I also wish they would get 4K HDMI 2.0 to work correctly which they still haven't done yet and they already want to move on to 2.1 Back when I had my Samsung 4K Player I had nothing but HDMI handshake issue. Then upgraded to the Phillips player which resolved most of that but still not the greatest player. Hoping the Oppo 4K player will have all the issues worked out and work the best. Way to many issues with 4K in my opinion with lack of content and crap 4K UHD titles and Player Issues. The people that have waited so far to jump into 4K are the smart people.

I have a question about HDMI 2.1

Presuming I buy a 2017/2018 TV supporting HDMI 2.1, do I need a AV Receiver supporting 2.1 too ? What if the AV is only 2.0a (same question for the UHD Player) ? Does the Dynamic Metadata works or no ?

Thanks.

At this point, I'd almost say everyone is better off just bypassing the receiver for video and just using the audio sync functions. I have my HDMI 1.3 and I'll be sticking with that unless I move to an object oriented sound setup like Atmos or DTS X.

HDMI Forum, Inc. today announced the upcoming release of Version 2.1 of the HDMI Specification. This latest HDMI Specification supports a range of Higher Video Resolutions and refresh rates including 8K60 and 4K120, Dynamic HDR, and increased bandwidth with a new 48G cable. Version 2.1 of the HDMI Specification is backward compatible with earlier versions of the Specification, and was developed by the HDMI Forum's Technical Working Group whose members represent some of the world's leading manufacturers of consumer electronics, personal computers, mobile devices, cables and components...

HDMI Specification 2.1 Features Include:
  • Higher Video Resolutions support a range of higher resolutions and faster refresh rates including 8K60Hz and 4K120Hz for immersive viewing and smooth fast-action detail.
  • Dynamic HDR ensures every moment of a video is displayed at its ideal values for depth, detail, brightness, contrast, and wider color gamuts—on a scene-by-scene or even a frame-by-frame basis.
  • 48G cables enable up to 48Gbps bandwidth for uncompressed HDMI 2.1 feature support including 8K video with HDR. The cable is backwards compatible with earlier versions of the HDMI Specification and can be used with existing HDMI devices.
  • eARC supports the most advanced audio formats such as object-based audio, and enables advanced audio signal control capabilities including device auto-detect.
  • Game Mode VRR features variable refresh rate, which enables a 3D graphics processor to display the image at the moment it is rendered for more fluid and better detailed gameplay, and for reducing or eliminating lag, stutter, and frame tearing.
The new specification will be available to all HDMI 2.0 Adopters and they will be notified when it is released early in Q2 2017.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's verification that HDMI 2.0 can be upgraded to 2.1 by firmware in TVs, players, and streamers, correct?

I figured it actually meant the new spec would be out to hardware manufacturers this year so they could put the new HW in by next CES to make us all upgrade.

Maybe I was biased by the rumors that HDMI 2.0 could be upgraded to 2.1, but what about these Dolby Vision players like Oppo and LG? Wouldn't they need to be 2.1?

No, DV should go out over 2.0a. I believe some people with Chromecast Ultras have already confirmed DV over 2.0a.

DV has been being broadcast over 2.0 for awhile now, Vudu has had it.

ALL the LG 2016 OLEDs were DV with 2.0a connections.

I know that, but most TVs with DV have the VUDU 4K app built in. Until recently, very few external devices have had the VUDU 4K capable app, and I honestly wasn't aware if it was possible.

OK, let me simplify. Dolby Vision does not even require 2.0a, that was for HDR10 only. IIRC, DV can even work with HDMI 1.4.

HDR dynamic metadata is the only feature that matters for UHD Blu-ray.

The format specs don't allow resolution above 3840x2160 and frame rates over 60fps.

I hope a firmware upgrade is enough for dynamic HDR....

Dynamic metadata doesn't matter either. It's not part of the spec. HDMI 2.1 doesn't change a thing for UHD.

But HDR10 is part of the spec, so if the player can somehow "pass" those metadata it could work. Call it HDMI 2.0c if you want...
