Not too surprising, given that AV usually gives us DV most of the time. This only has HDR10. I wouldn't be surprised if the reason falls on Tarantino, most likely having to approve a new transfer if it was done.

Surely Arrow could've used the dynamic HDR10+ metadata from the Uni release to create a MEL Dolby Vision layer with the same properties.

Ditto. But, than again we need to ask ourselves why some of these bigwig studios and independent distributors still continue to use HDR10 and not HDR10+ when it's free. Yet, we keep getting HDR10 releases. But, back to IB, as I said it could possibly be because Tarantino, would've had to approve it. IE; money and time to get his smuggish bum down to say yes he approves of the new picture quality.

The difference is bigger in motion if you tend to notice compression-related stuff. Especially in more static shots as grain "fades out" into highlights, such as against the sky, the Universal has a touch of frozen grain there whereas the Arrow is smooth. Not a dealbreaker for most but for pixel peepers, the Arrow is a nice upgrade.

That does sound encouraging, as I love organic grain and my tolerance for frozen grain is ever decreasing!
My copy arrived on Monday, but I haven't yet had time to check it out.

Maybe the softer subtitle bits are from a filmout?

Those are the theatrical subtitles. Better that than whatever shows up from the 4K player.

Hey mate, just a question; do you have any plans to compare the French Studiocanal edition of Shaun of the Dead to the US / UK

Plus do you have any plans to compare the US Criteron Trainspotting to the UK release?

Thanks 🙏

No, just for US and UK. Although, unless they also created a clean 4K HDR master, the international distributors will probably have to deal with the burned in subs their own way.

He mentioned multiple times that he only does comparisons on movies and editions he's actually interested in. I asked him about Shaun and the answer is no. Besides, that released has forced French subtitles, so unless you have a way to deal with them it's not worth it.

Not if you're watching it in another language.

Huh, not sure what you mean by this, as the Lionsgate disc is English audio only. Other regions will obviously either get their own opportunity to replace different language subs (like Inglourious Basterds re-issue did recently or Eagle Pictures usually does for Italy), or more likely, just include additional subtitles to fit on the screen to follow along. This is a non-issue.
