Samsung LCD TV panel orders up for grabs
Rebecca Kuo, Tainan; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES Monday 20 April 2020

LCD panel makers in China and Taiwan are expected to gear up efforts to grab TV panel orders to be released by Samsung Electronics after its associate company Samsung Displays stops producing LCD panels, according to industry sources.

Samsung Display has decided to terminate production of LCD panels at its plants in Korea and China by year-end 2020, as it moves to accelerate developing high-margin QLED panels, said the sources.

However, Samsung Display will remain the largest supplier of LCD TV panels to Samsung Electronics in 2020, with its shipments likely to reach 10 million units, supporting the vendor's goal of delivering up to 46 million TVs worldwide in the year, the sources indicated.

To mitigate its production risks, Samsung Electronics is likely to buy TV panels from multiple sources after 2020, mainly panel makers in China and Taiwan, the sources added.

China Star Optoelectronics Technology (CSOT), a subsidiary of TCL, has a good chance to grab more windfall orders from the Korean TV vendor as it holds a 10% stake in an 8.5G joint venture currently operated by Samsung Display in Suzhou, China, noted the sources.

Samsung Display holds a majority 60% share in the joint venture and the city government of Suzhou has 30%. Samsung Display has recently resumed talks for selling its stake to CSOT after previous discussions for such a deal were suspended due to unspecified reasons, the sources said.

Meanwhile, Taiwan-based AU Optronics (AUO) is expected to be able enhancing its business relationships with Samsung Electronics, having supplied high-end TV panels such as 4K, curved and bezel-less 8K models to the Korean TV vendor for years, commented the sources.

Cooperation between AUO and Samsung will continue to focus on high-end and slim-type models due to capacity constraints at AUO, said the sources.

Flat Panel Display Market Set for Unprecedented 11.1 Percent Decline in 2020

Quote:
Global unit shipments of flat-panel displays (FPD) are expected to plunge by 11.1 percent in 2020 as the coronavirus crisis cripples demand for televisions and smartphones, according to Omdia.

FPD shipments are set to total 3.2 billion units in 2020, down from 3.6 billion in 2019. The market has been undergoing low-single-digit increases and decreases since the financial crisis in the second half of 2008 caused shipments to drop by 8.8 percent in 2009. However, the double-digit drop this year represents an unprecedented rate of decline, as reported by Omdia’s Display Long-term Demand Forecast Tracker.

Nice chose of words, implementation is defined as the process of putting a decision or plan into effect. Take for example this paragraph.

We’ve accepted the growth of the file sizes and developed products in anticipation of that need,” said Bob Caniglia, Blackmagic Design’s director of sales operations for North America, who points out that they offer existing products that can record and playback 8K and switch live with a 10-input 8K switcher, as well as monitoring devices to convert quad 12-gig SDI to quad HDMI to feed 8K HDMI displays.
Note the necessity to use quad HDMI to feed 8K displays? That reminds one of the earlier methods for driving 8k computer monitors, if you recall 4 GPU's. Thats not a real indication of progress in that area. Commercially we need to a advancement with GPU technology where a single card is performing this task along with a single cable in order for it to be used commercially before consumers. One only needs to look at the YouTube videos of someone driving a 8K game monitor came with a very elaborate CPU with GPU's. We'll eventually get there, but this is a lot more challenging then 4K.

Quote:
“The tools to ingest, process, edit, color, composite and the rest are in place right now,” he said. “The only issues involve the upgrade in storage and bandwidth, and those become less constraining as the technology improves.
Yes I think this industry has already becoming well honed to 8K production with the edition bandwidth/storage requirements.

Its the transportation keystone architecture between that content and commercial cinemas that is the next hurdle. Not a great big satellite fed system with multiple GPU's fed with 4 or more interface cables going to a 8K display to show the ecosystem is actually ready for implementation.

As Captain Picard use to say "make it so!"

8K Media Player Eliminates Need for Large PC-Based System - Digital Signage Connection 4/10/2020

Quote:
The Socionext “s8” is a world-leading compact, lightweight and low-power media player that performs local media playback/cloud distribution of 8K at 60p (HEVC) content in real time. Additionally, it supports Android OS and major network protocols such as HLS, UDP, and TCP. The “s8” measures at a compact 16 inches wide by 2.3 inches tall, weighs just 5.3 pounds, and operates at 50W. It surpasses the competition in its small size, low weight, and reduced power usage.
BACKGROUND
The Socionext “s8” is designed to run on the widely supported, easily deployable Android OS and allows for Gb Ethernet or USB 3.0/2.0 input with up to 4 x HDMI 2.0 output. It features simple content management including scheduling, status check, and content upload with play, pause and stop control functions.

CHALLENGES
Most digital media and DOOH content distributors may have just recently upgraded to a 4K TV or monitor, but 8K video is already making significant headway in applications where having the highest resolution possible is essential. The problem is, there have not been any good production-ready and easy-to-use 8K decoding solutions available. This is why the company has introduced the Socionext “s8” 8K media player.

SOLUTIONS
The “s8” can perform local media playback/cloud distribution of 8K/60p (HEVC) content and display 8K content on four 4K monitors and one 8K monitor. It features rich 8K content playback function for content saved in USB memory, and cloud distribution of content over Ethernet. It is also extremely easy to use with intuitive set-up features. The plug-and-play “s8” 8K media player is available for white-label use in a wide range of applications including DOOH, entertainment and other retail applications; large-format digital displays and signage, 8K content display and post production. Additionally, Socionext offers a companion converter box “s8-c21” with 4 x HDMI 2.0 input to 1 x HDMI 2.1 output for connection from the “s8” 8K media player. The s8-c21 is the only transmitter product on the market capable of achieving this and offers a unique solution/workflow for production and post production in 8K.

Now for the naysayers article of the day, there is always one

8K cameras are coming. No, you don’t need one - Digital Trends

Quote:
When Canon unveiled more details about its upcoming EOS R5 mirrorless camera today, it touted an over-the-top 8K video mode. I expect the R5 will be an impressive camera that may just shoot Canon’s EOS R series ahead of Nikon, Sony, and Panasonic in the full-frame mirrorless game, but Canon has yet to detail its still-photo capabilities. Instead, all attention is focused on that buzzworthy term, 8K.

It’s all hype.

Yes, the R5 is a professional camera, but its arrival will usher in a new era for video content. It won’t be long before Costco and Walmart are lining shelves with lower-tier models emblazoned with an 8K logo.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not anti-8K. I think there’s a place for 8K displays. These displays, when combined with HDR (high dynamic range), would make an excellent medium for displaying photographs — perhaps even better than print.

I just don’t think that an 8K video camera makes a lot of sense. Not for the average person, and not even the average professional videographer.
I just think that we are becoming pretty close that the average photography enthusiast is being misrepresented in this bias opinion from Daven Mathies.

The argument against really falls down to 8K ecosystem is not here, because of that there is no need for consumer 8K camera. But folks you have to start somewhere not sit on your thumbs if you can afford to experiment with this technology very shortly instead of dragging those big Red Digital cameras around.

Yes I tend to not differentiate between the two (LCD vs QLED), only that note Samsung is seeking higher margins and looking for multiple sources, which says profits and manufacturing in China have hurt them Geoff.

Fujinon develops two 8K broadcast zoom lenses

Quote:
Recording 8K video, which has four times the resolution of 4K/UHD, requires lenses with an exceptionally advanced optical performance. The 66x zoom of Fujinon’s HP66x15.2-ESM box lens is the highest zoom magnification on any 8K lens so far; it is due to be released in the summer of 2020.

The smaller Fujinon HP12x7.6ERD-S9 offers a focal length range from a wide angle of 7.6mm to 91mm in telephoto and should start deliveries in the autumn.

According to Fujifilm, the ultra-high resolution of the 8K lenses “is combined with vivid colour reproduction and high contrast to produce rich tonal gradation in high dynamic range (HDR)”. Both lenses can be used with the focus position demand unit Fujinon EPD-51A-D02/F03, released in March this year, to achieve precise focusing. The combination should simplify shooting 8K video, which demands an advanced level of focusing precision.

UHD HDR round up: 4K and 8K advance despite coronavirus setbacks - IBC.org 4/29/2020

Quote:
In fact, 8K is gaining ground as an acquisition format for high-end TV series and films. Season 2 of Amazon Prime’s psychological drama Homecoming and season 4 of Netflix runaway hit Money Heist were shot at 8K and 7K respectively for a variety of creative reasons. Mank, a feature biopic of the co-writer of iconic film Citizen Kane from director David Fincher is also shot in 8K and in black and white. The Eddy, a Netflix musical drama from La La Land director Damien Chazelle shot most of its episodes with the Red Helium 8K sensor, cropped to mimic capture on S16mm.

Producers can’t sell productions delivered in less than 4K to Netflix and it stands to reason that Netflix will be among the first streamers to offer an 8K option. When it does, it will have a catalogue of 8K material in the bank.
Quote:
6K is the new 4K
While 8K is still exotic, there is a trend toward shooting at resolutions beyond 4K for high end documentary and cine work. The additional data again providing scope to post-manipulate the image but still deliver in UHD.

Among cameras offering this are the EOS C500 Mark II (5.9K); Sony’s PXW-FX9 XDCAM which boasts a 6K full-frame sensor plus colour science inherited from the Venice camera; Blackmagic Design’s 6K, S35-sized sensor version of its Pocket Cinema Camera which allows users to fit EF lenses without the need for a converter; and Panasonic’s Lumix S1H full-frame mirrorless camera.
Quote:
8K post production
Productions need the flexibility to work with and combine content spanning a range of resolutions as well as both HDR and SDR ranging from HD SDR to 8K HDR, and everything in between.

“There’s a misconception that 8K is vastly more expensive than it actually is,” says AJA director of product marketing, Bryce Button. “Generally, moving to 8K is an incremental cost, especially if you’re already working in 4K or have worked in stereo 3D. The biggest expense often comes with storage and moving large volumes of data, but the strides made by the industry to support 4K and S3D have provided a strong foundation to support the data needs that 8K workflows require.”

Here's a pic with the Q900T setup in our showroom. This pic was taken when we powered it on with the protective plastic on the screen. It passed our initial q/c and it's now in our calibration lab for the break-in process and final q/c.

YouTube now streaming 8K video on 8K TVs with AV1 support - FlatPanesl HD 5/8/2020

Quote:
YouTube 8K on 8K TVs
YouTube has flipped the switch on not only AV1 streaming for TVs but also 8K streaming via AV1. It means that you can now enjoy YouTube's 8K videos on compatible 8K TVs.

LG and Samsung's 2020 8K models are the first TVs to support AV1 hardware decoding. Below you see YouTube 8K (60fps) streaming to an LG 2020 8K LCD TV (NANO95 range). Yesterday, TCL said that its new X915 8K TV will also support YouTube 8K via AV1 but that an update to Android 10 (scheduled for later this year) will be required to enable it. Philips has told FlatpanelsHD that it is committed to AV1, too.

What is AV1? It is the new royalty-free video codec and format developed by the Alliance for Open Media, which unites heavyweights like Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Intel, Netflix, LG, Microsoft, Netflix, and Samsung. AV1 has the potential to bring 4K HDR to far more devices and streaming services. At CES 2020 in January, YouTube confirmed that AV1 support is required to stream 8K videos on 8K TVs, even though its 8K videos are available through PC browsers in other formats.

YouTube is the first major streaming provider to offer video in 8K on 8K TVs. There is a good selection of showcase and user-generated videos available but no movies or TV shows. No major subscription streaming services like Amazon Prime or Netflix have announced plans to offer content in 8K.
