They then applied the Lowry process (temporal averaging to extract more detail) to the 10K scan and found that there were slightly finer details discernible when viewed at 4K.

Obviously this wasn't an 8K viewing test so won't seem majorly relevant here, but it would've been interesting to compare the two scans sans Lowry processing on an 8K display system. I say sans Lowry because when you have to resort to a very expensive and not entirely transparent process like Lowry's to squeeze a drop more >4K detail out of 35mm then it's not going to be practicable for most. And that's a recent-ish film too, the further back you go the less resolving power that the stocks and lenses have. But again, a straight shootout between the native scans would be cool.
Let us not forget that we are working with moving images - not 35mm stills. That will definitely lower the resolution. And as you mentioned - a movie is shot with different film stocks as the script calls for. Faster ISO speeds produce less resolution but are needed to shoot in low light scenes.

Where were stills mentioned there, Lee? But yes, motion resolution is one of 24fps' bigger flaws which is why that Lowry process as mentioned rebuilds temporal detail from adjacent frames.

I don't so much mean modern stocks and lenses but the resolving power of older stocks and lenses in general, though there's long been a trend to 'unpretty' motion picture cinematography anyway by adding more softness, distortion, halation, and grain.

I suppose that's demo material playing there, but that eggshell blue background is darned impressive. And the monkey looks almost 3D real.

Not to rain on your parade Robert but using the largest number to describe the smallest sales segment of TV sales is nothing but fluff.

Going from 94,000 to 160,000 for a 4 year old tech - that's miniscule and just shows consumers aren't interested in having an 8K TV is their home.

WW yearly sales for all TVs is about 210 million.

It's more of a pricing premium and lack of standardization than saying "8K has flopped".

And without software does anyone here really think it's more than a niche at this time?

@Lee A Stewart. Understood and agree.

I just cut and pasted the article headline and graph.

However, even looking at all of the other #s 8K has a decent steady growth with this new 2022 model year looks to be the largest growth we'll see.

Consumers have been trained for decades - you watch HD on an HDTV, you watch 4K on a 4K TV. Now they are being told you watch 4K on an 8K TV and it goes against what they have been doing for almost 25 years.

Mean while . . . TV OEMs are in a pickle. They want to sell 8K TVs but everyone says the same thing . . . there's no 8K content. They can't start slashing prices because what is going to be the next premium priced display? 12K? 16K?

So they are back peddling. Coming out with premium priced high performance 4K TVs because there's plenty of 4K content.

I've created a lot of native 8K HDR content with a prosumer 8K mirrorless camera. When I filmed my son's wedding in our back yard and played it back on several 8K TVs I was in love with the exceptional 8K HDR picture quality. It looks naturally 3D.

For most of the new 2022 8K TVs the up-conversion/scaling is very happily excellent. Sony and LG upgraded the processors memory on their new 8K TV processors and the extra memory is dedicated to video scaling. Samsung has a new processor for the QN900B that also performs very well.

At our July 30-31, 2022 4K and 8K TV Shootout Evalueaiton event we're taking the winners of the 4K and 8K and positing them butt next to each other with the same 4K content demonstrated on both TVs at the same time.

Ugh. I hate weeding. My Dad would make me do it in the middle of summer in Riverside CA in the late '70s. These days it's much better just to hire someone to do it for me. At least he didn't use the camcorder to tape the torture.

Same here re: weeds. But I was in Central Illinois ten years earlier, we were surrounded by farmland and some weeds were 3 feet tall! And thinning the shrubs was back breaking. Ah, memories.
Hope Robert was filming his son’s memories!

Formal and elaborate weddings is just for a show to impress other people, and they're paying an arm, leg and a foot for it. You'll be surprised how many people who literally go into debt to have an expensive, traditional wedding! If it was me, I would've gone down to the justice of the peace, pay $50.00 for the marriage license, say "I do" and be done with it. It's still a marriage without all of the extravaganza and going into a $35,000.00 debt. That's a nice down payment for a house.
