There is so many applications where a smaller 4k tv is necessary. Such as bedrooms, kitchens, mobile homes.

With going to LED backlighting not using CFL anymore, your TV size can be almost size now, not just large panels. This also encompasses computer displays which can support 8K resolutions.

The manufactures are just dumping cheap panel sizes on us at the moment. But yes if one is OK with paying the same as a larger cheap 4K panel they should sell you what sizes are useful, which is 32" and 40", not just 43",49"/50", 55", 65", 75" 85" and so on.

Examples: Samsung QN32Q50RAFXZA $499 at Magnolia via BB

Apple TV+, Disney+, HBO GO, HBO NOW, Hulu, Netflix, Prime Video, Sling TV, YouTube

As a response to LOTR's last post:

Be that as it may, unlike before, I don't think 8K in itself will hold any significant improvements over its previous format. Especially since there won't be actual physical 8K media to go with it.

This split screen functionality has its uses in Bars/Pubs and some businesses.

8K TVs are ahead of 8K content ... for now.
Numero uno advantage...UPSCALING (all to 8K).
Dos...8K homemade videos.
Tres...8K streams...YouTube, ...

Atm most of the manufacturers seem to have the idea that everyone wants and has the space for larger screens.

I live with my parents currently and as such don't have the space for a 49"+ TV. The TV I just bought a week ago is a 4K 40" Panasonic GX800 Series. It was just under Ł600 which isn't bad when it's got 5* reviews from Trusted Reviews and What Hifi.

When I was looking before choosing that model I found they are actually very few 40" 4K TV's on the market in the UK. There's lots of 43" models but most of them are cheap lower quality sets.

Default So Far 8k TVs Aren't Causing Excitement In TV Buyers

I'd much rather have a larger, high quality, 4k flat panel, from one of the top manufacturers, than a smaller 8k TV made by anyone. And Saturday (Nov. 23) at a Best Buy, here in Ohio, I saw evidence that most consumers feel the same way, and are voting to confirm that opinion by how they are spending their dollars. Because about 5 weeks ago, when a BB salesman first introduced me to the 82 inch Samsung 8k flat panel of Samsung's 900 series, that TV was then carrying a price of $6,999 at Best Buy. And the salesman had noted that the TV had initially been priced at $7,999, but that a $1,000 price drop had occurred before that flat panel was even installed on the sales floor.

But here's the thing folks. Saturday when I saw that 82 inch 8k Samsung for the 2nd time, instead of its selling price at Best Buy still being $6,999, as it had been 5 weeks ago, its price had dropped by $2,000, to bring it all the way down to $4,999. Now having worked in the TV business, myself, I know that it's quite unusual for a TV model as new as the 900 series Samsung 82 inch 8k TV, to experience such a huge price decrease, so early in the product's life cycle. And BTW, that $4,999 price is not some sort of pre-Black Friday special, but is now Best Buy's regular selling price for that flat panel.

So stores simply COULDN'T get people to pay $7,000 for an 82 inch 8k TV, yet I remember when guys were paying $7,000 in 2008 dollars (that's about $9,000 today) to buy Pioneer's 60 inch (its largest) 1080p Kuro plasma.

All of this tells me that a large majority of the members of America's collection of TV buying average Joes (& also, Joes of ABOVE average incomes), are folks who are reaching the same conclusion I arrived at, when comparing 8k TVs to high performing 4k TVs, which namely is: 8k flat panels offer such a minor (to non-existent) improvement in visual quality, compared to excellent 4k TVs, that spending any sort of significant price premium to buy an 8k TV, simply seems to be a waste of money.

There's even a Sony 85 inch 4k flat panel at that Best Buy, which was recently reduced in price from $2,799 down to $2,299, yet many people think of it as looking just as good as the Samsung 82" 8k panel. And BTW, at the same Best Buy store, a 77 inch 4k TV of LG's C series of OLED flat panels, sells for that same $4,999 that the 8k 82" Samsung sells for. And every video pro from the TV testers at C-NET, to those testing for Consumer Reports, as well as even Joe Kane, the video guru who developed the very display performance parameters which all TV calibrators use to adjust video displays to achieve the best picture quality they're capable of, are all people who agree that OLED technology is so superior to the outmoded backlight dependent tech that compromises black level performance in all of the 8k TVs released so far, that the 77 inch 4k LG OLED flat panel simply smokes Samsung's 82 inch 8k model when presenting very dark scenes, such as those set in outer space, in movies like "Gravity".

So I've said a larger 4k TV would be my choice over a smaller 8k TV, but if the terrific quality provided by OLED is taken into account, though I'm a big screen sort of guy, I'd be willing to sacrifice 5 inches of diagonal picture size by going for the 77 inch 4k OLED flat panel, if the choice was between it and the 82 inch 8k flat panel, if both TVs are at the same price. However, to be very honest, if I were to win a fortune in the lottery, since I do prefer very big screens, I'd even be willing to spend the huge amount of money needed to obtain one of Sony's or Samsung's largest TVs, that are both 8k flat panels with 98 inch screens, yet still sacrifice OLED's perfect black level by using the somewhat outdated LCD tech that depends on LED backlighting. But since a big screen is so important to me for viewing large scale movies, and our situation here renders a projector impractical, I could rationalize giving up the best black level performance, in favor of sheer screen size, since most movie scenes aren't very dark, and IMO, a big increase in screen size (as long as PQ isn't sacrificed to go big) always provides more impact for viewers, as they watch scenes which aren't very dark.

I want 8K MicroLED (or OLED) 85" HDR10 (2000 Nits support, 12-Bit panel), HFR support (HDMI 2.1), 3D support, extreme video processor, extreme streaming and extreme low price (less than five grands) between the year 2020 and 2022. Anything else short of that is cheap whiskey.

I'm skipping 8K, sticking with 4k Oled and Qled until we start getting some drastically new technology...like Holograms, Trek Style, Matrix VR, Blade Runner 2049 Joi type technology where all the actors are walking around your living room viewable at 360° throughout a Holofilm.

How old are your pets?

* 4K OLED is very inexpensive today. ...Rollable and transparent OLED should be here now.
Holographic moving pictures @ home is coming, right after they come up with glasses-free 3D technology, in 8K.

That depends if you think 2 grand in what ever currency is inexpensive.

I think more focus should be placed on design over resolution. You want to push 8K which is utterly useless for most viewing situations below 80 inches or so. Meanwhile, the general consumer, still has a huge 55" barrier in their mind.

Which yes has a lot to do with the ingrained 9ft viewing distance. But having a giant LED board coming out the backside of your telly Quasimodo style. Is not only not very aesthetically pleasing; but also makes anything 65" look gigantic in most showrooms.

The wallpaper design, roll ups. These are indeed the antidote as I see it. And what will convince people to start viewing at the 40 degree angle.

2 & New. I hope they develop the Rollable to create a Harry Potter style newspaper, like you buy one and every morning it updates with the subscription or subscriptions of your choice. All photos are actually looped snippets of videos and full videos with written articles. And then I can't wait for the Transparent (which a viewed built into a shelf as a sliding glass) only I want it like Vicker's wall from Prometheus I admittedly would buy that between now and Holo Technology also I just saw that your location is Portishead.. love that band and own the albums both Studio and Live @ releases. Also own the first 2 on crisp Vinyl.

Portishead has a musical note, a band I like, very much.
I'm Canadian.

8K is going to grow in 2020...very very good...4K is getting cheaper and cheaper.
Just two years ago people dreaming of quality OLED in the 65" Class and having less than $2,000 in their pocket were left in the freezing cold. Today they are on fire.

Yeah but what utility is 8K going to have for film enthusiasts outside of upscaling when getting an 80" + TV?
